Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the 406A rated 399,000 BTU?
The 406A chassis is rated 406,000 BTU on natural gas. On propane the certified input is 399,000 BTU. It is the same heater size, not a smaller model, which is why you will see both numbers quoted around the web.
What does P-R406A-EP-C mean?
Raypak's model code. P is pool, R406A is the chassis, E is electronic ignition, P is propane, and C is the copper heat exchanger. Rheem and Ruud sell the same unit as P-M406A-EP-C and P-D406A-EP-C.
Why does the orifice number matter?
The orifice sets gas flow for your altitude. A #57 is the propane 0 to 2,000 ft configuration. Above that you need the high altitude version, sold as 009235.
What size pool does this suit?
Large in-ground pools and pool and spa combinations where recovery time matters. Sizing depends on surface area, temperature rise, and climate, so have a pool professional size it for your install.
Copper or cupro-nickel?
Copper is standard and fine on balanced chlorinated water. For saltwater or low pH, the cupro-nickel version 014953 lasts longer.
Does it need professional installation?
Yes. Propane sizing matters especially at this output, since an undersized supply will starve the heater.
