Frequently Asked Questions

What does P-R406A-EN-C mean?

Raypak's model code. P is pool, R406A is the 406,000 BTU chassis, E is electronic ignition, N is natural gas, and C is the copper heat exchanger.

Why does the orifice number matter?

The orifice sets gas flow for your altitude. A #50 is the 0 to 2,000 ft configuration. Install it higher and the heater runs rich, loses output, and can fault.

What size pool does 406,000 BTU suit?

Large in-ground pools and pool and spa combinations where recovery time matters. Sizing depends on surface area, temperature rise, and climate, so have a pool professional size it for your install.

Do I need this much output?

Not always. A bigger heater reaches temperature faster but costs more to buy and needs a larger gas supply line. If your pool is average sized and you keep it heated rather than heating from cold, the 009218 at 336K is usually enough.

Is a copper heat exchanger right for my water?

Copper is standard and works well on balanced, chlorinated water. On a saltwater pool or where pH swings low, the cupro-nickel version is the longer lasting choice.

Does it need professional installation?

Yes. Gas sizing matters especially at this output, since an undersized gas line will starve the heater.
