How a Hot Surface Igniter Works

This is not a spark electrode. A ceramic element draws current and glows to ignition temperature, then the gas valve opens onto the glowing element to light the burner. That matters for diagnosis: hot surface systems do not click, so a silent no-light is exactly what a failed igniter looks like.

Why does my heater run but never light?

A failed igniter is the most common cause. The board runs pre-purge, calls for ignition, gets no flame signal and locks out. Before replacing it, confirm gas supply and that the gas valve opens, since those give the same symptom.

Can I test the old igniter?

A resistance check across the element shows open circuit on a failed unit. A visual check is often enough: cracks, blistering or a chalky eroded element all mean replacement. Never test by touching the element.

How careful do I need to be installing it?
