The Hayward W3S270T2 ProSeries 27" Sand Filter is the 2" top-mount version of Hayward's high-rate sand filter, sized for in-ground pools, spas and water features. It uses an umbrella-fold self-cleaning lateral system so water spreads evenly through the full sand bed, which means better filtration between backwashes and more complete cleaning when you do backwash.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sand does the W3S270T2 need?

350 lbs of #20 silica sand. Sand is sold separately, so budget for seven 50 lb bags when you order the filter.

What is the difference between the W3S270T and the W3S270T2?

Valve size. The W3S270T ships with the 1.5" VariFlo valve and the W3S270T2 with the 2" version. Match it to your plumbing, and note that 2" reduces flow restriction if you are running a modern variable speed pump.

What size pool does a 27" filter suit?

Gallon capacity ratings for sand filters are estimates that shift with your pump's flow rate and turnover time. Rather than going by gallons alone, match the filter's 74 GPM per sq ft rate against your pump's actual flow. Send us your pump model if you would like us to check the pairing.

What does the umbrella-fold lateral system do?

It distributes water evenly across the entire sand bed instead of letting it channel through one path. More of the sand does filtering work, and backwashing lifts debris out of the whole bed rather than just part of it.

How often should I replace the sand?

Roughly every five to seven years for most pools. The signs are water that no longer clears the way it used to, and backwash intervals getting shorter than they were.

When should I backwash?

When the pressure gauge reads about 8 to 10 PSI above your clean baseline. Note the clean reading right after a backwash so you have something to compare against.

Is the valve included?

Yes. The 2" VariFlo top-mount control valve ships with the filter, along with the laterals, tank base and pressure gauge.

Can I use it on a saltwater pool?

Yes. The polymeric tank does not corrode in salt water. Normal water chemistry maintenance still applies.
