POOL LIGHT TYPES

Understanding the Different Types of Pool Lights

Pool lighting comes in different sizes and mounting styles. The right light depends on where it will be installed, the type of niche or fitting already in the pool, and the amount of illumination you want.

01
LARGE FORMAT

Pool Lights

Full-size pool lights are designed to illuminate larger swimming areas and are commonly installed in traditional wet niches built into the pool wall.

✓

02
SMALLER FORMAT

Spa Lights

Spa lights are smaller than standard pool lights and are commonly used where a full-size fixture would be too large, including spas and compact illuminated areas.

✓

Smaller fixture size

✓

03
COMPACT INSTALLATION

Nicheless Lights

Nicheless lights use a compact wall fitting instead of a traditional large wet niche. Their smaller footprint allows more flexible placement throughout the pool or spa.

REPLACING AN EXISTING LIGHT?

Start With What's Already in the Pool

Before choosing a replacement, identify the existing fixture and how it mounts. A light that looks similar from the front may use a completely different niche or installation method behind the wall.

01 Light Type Pool, spa or nicheless
02 Niche / Fitting Identify the mounting system
03 Voltage 12V or 120V as applicable
04 Cord Length Enough to reach the junction point
!
“Pool light” and “spa light” describe more than brightness.

They can use different fixture sizes, niches and mounting systems. Likewise, nicheless lights are a different installation format rather than simply a smaller version of a traditional pool light.

TRADITIONAL LIGHT NICHES

Large Niche vs. Small Niche

Traditional pool and spa lights generally use one of two fixture formats: a larger pool-light niche or a smaller spa-light niche. The correct replacement must match the existing installation.

01 LARGE NICHE

Full-Size Pool Light

Large niches are commonly used for traditional full-size pool lights. The larger fixture is designed to illuminate broad areas of the swimming pool.

FORMAT Large
COMMON USE Main Pool
LIGHTING Broad Coverage
VS
02 SMALL NICHE

Spa-Size Light

Small niches are used for compact traditional fixtures commonly installed in spas and other areas where a full-size pool light would be unnecessarily large.

FORMAT Compact
COMMON USE Spa
LIGHTING Focused Coverage
RELATIVE SIZE

The Difference Is Physical — Not Electrical

Large and small describe the fixture and niche format. They do not tell you whether the light is 12V or 120V, white or color, or how bright the fixture is.

Large Niche Pool-size format
Small Niche Spa-size format

Large-niche and small-niche lights are not direct substitutes.

Even when two lights use the same voltage or color system, their fixture dimensions and mounting requirements can be different. Verify niche compatibility before ordering a replacement.

SIZE & APPLICATION

Light Size & Application

Different areas of the pool call for different fixture formats. Large lights are commonly used for broad illumination, while smaller fixtures and nicheless lights give you more flexibility in compact or architectural areas.

THE MAIN IDEA Larger fixtures are about coverage. Smaller fixtures are about placement flexibility.

Fixture diameter alone does not determine brightness. Always compare the actual light output, intended application and installation requirements of the specific model.

ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS

120V vs. 12V Pool Lights

Voltage describes how the light receives power — not how bright it is. A 120V fixture operates from line voltage, while a 12V fixture requires a compatible transformer to reduce the incoming voltage before it reaches the light.

120V
LINE VOLTAGE

Direct Electrical Path

A 120V pool light is designed to operate from a 120-volt lighting circuit without a 12V step-down transformer for the fixture.

WHITE OR COLOR?

White vs. Color LED Pool Lights

Both can provide excellent underwater illumination. The main difference is what you want the pool to feel like at night: clean and simple, or customizable and atmospheric.

01 WHITE LED

Clean, Consistent Illumination

White LED lighting keeps the pool looking bright and natural without color programming or scene changes.

Best for: Visibility · Simplicity · Classic nighttime appearance
02 COLOR LED

Customizable Nighttime Ambiance

Color LED lighting lets the pool change its appearance with different colors, scenes and effects depending on the light system.

Best for: Entertaining · Ambiance · Color scenes · Custom looks
HOW TO CHOOSE

Think About What Matters Most at Night

White lighting prioritizes a straightforward illuminated pool. Color lighting prioritizes atmosphere and visual variety.

02 Controller Dedicated lighting control on supported systems
→
03 Automation Color scenes through a compatible pool system
MULTIPLE COLOR LIGHTS?

Keep the Lighting Family Consistent

When several color lights operate together, using compatible fixtures from the same lighting family can make synchronization and scene control much easier.

i
Voltage and color capability are separate decisions.

White and color lights may be available in different voltage options, fixture formats and niche styles. Always verify the exact model rather than assuming all color lights or all white lights use the same setup.

LIGHTING TECHNOLOGY

LED vs. Older Incandescent / Halogen Lights

Many older pools were built with incandescent or halogen underwater lights. Modern LED fixtures can provide similar or better illumination with far lower power consumption and more lighting options.

01
OLDER TECHNOLOGY

Incandescent / Halogen

Traditional pool lights produce illumination by heating a filament inside the lamp. These fixtures can provide strong white light but typically use substantially more power and generate more heat.

•

Higher power consumption

•

Produces more heat

•

Usually white-light focused

•

Common in older pool installations

VS
02
MODERN TECHNOLOGY

LED Pool Lights

LED fixtures create light electronically rather than using a heated filament. They typically use much less energy, generate less heat and can offer white or color-changing illumination.

✓

Lower power consumption

✓

Lower heat output

✓

White and color options

✓

Longer expected service life

WHY UPGRADE TO LED?

More Light Options With Less Electrical Demand

One of the biggest advantages of LED is that the fixture can produce useful underwater illumination while consuming a fraction of the power used by many older incandescent lights.

01 Energy Use Significantly lower than older high-wattage lamps
02 Heat Much less heat generated by the light source
03 Color Optional color scenes and effects
04 Controls Can integrate with compatible automation
OLDER HIGH-WATTAGE LIGHTS

Don't Replace by Wattage Alone

Older pool lights were often described by lamp wattage — such as 300W, 400W or 500W. An LED replacement may use far fewer watts while still being designed to replace the same general application.

OLDER LIGHT High Wattage
More electrical demand
LED LIGHT Lower Wattage
Lower electrical demand
UPGRADING AN OLD LIGHT?

The New LED Still Has to Fit the Existing System

A lower-wattage LED is not automatically a direct replacement. The new fixture still needs to match the existing niche or fitting, voltage, cord requirements and control system.

01 Niche Confirm physical compatibility
02 Voltage 12V or 120V as required
03 Cord Length Must reach the junction point
04 Controls Verify color or automation compatibility
OLDER Incandescent / Halogen Higher wattage · More heat · Simpler white-light operation
→
MODERN LED Lower power · Less heat · White or color options
!
Do not compare LED and incandescent lights by wattage alone.

Wattage measures electrical power consumption, not direct light output. When selecting a replacement, compare the manufacturer's intended application, fixture compatibility and lighting performance.

CORD LENGTH

Understanding Pool Light Cord Length

Pool lights are sold with factory-attached cords in different lengths. The cord must reach from the fixture to the approved junction point, with enough extra length for servicing.

MEASURE THE FULL ROUTE

Don't Measure Straight Across the Pool

The cord follows the actual conduit path from the light, through the pool wall, and up to the junction point.

Simple rule: Actual conduit run + service slack = required cord length.
01 Light Underwater fixture
02 Conduit Actual cord route
03 Junction Point Electrical connection
30 FT Shorter Runs
50 FT Common Residential
100 FT Longer Runs
150 FT+ Available on Some Models
SERVICE SLACK

Leave Enough Cord to Service the Light

Traditional underwater fixtures may need to be removed from the niche and brought to the deck for servicing, so the cord should not be stretched tight.

TOO SHORT
ENOUGH LENGTH
!
Choose the correct factory cord length before ordering.

A cord that is too short should not be treated as something that can simply be extended underwater. Verify the route and manufacturer requirements before selecting the fixture.

COLOR CONTROL & AUTOMATION

How Pool Light Color Control Works

Color pool lights can be controlled in several different ways. Some change scenes by cycling power, while others use a dedicated controller or integrate directly with a compatible pool automation system.

01
BASIC CONTROL

Power-Cycle Control

Some color lights change colors or scenes by turning the light power off and back on in a specific sequence.

✓

Simple control method

✓

No separate color controller required

✓

Common on many legacy color systems

02
DEDICATED CONTROL

Lighting Controller

Some light families use a dedicated controller to select colors, scenes, brightness options or synchronized effects.

✓

Easier color selection

✓

Purpose-built for lighting

✓

Can simplify multi-light control

03
FULL SYSTEM CONTROL

Pool Automation

Compatible automation systems can control pool lighting alongside pumps, heaters, spa modes and other pool equipment from one interface.

✓

Centralized pool control

✓

Schedules and scenes

✓

App control on supported systems

HOW IT WORKS

Control Method Depends on the Light Family

The light itself determines what type of control is available. A color fixture must be paired with a compatible switching, controller or automation method.

LED RETROFIT GUIDE

Can I Put a New LED Light in My Existing Niche?

SHORT ANSWER Often, yes.

Many modern LED fixtures are designed to work with existing pool and spa niches. The exact niche, mounting method and electrical system still need to be verified first.

POOL WALL
EXISTING NICHE
NEW LED
Retrofit concept The existing niche stays in the wall while the compatible light fixture is replaced.
HOW A RETROFIT WORKS

The Niche May Not Need to Be Replaced

On many traditional installations, the niche is permanently built into the pool wall. When upgrading to LED, the old fixture can often be removed and replaced with a new fixture designed for that niche.

Four Things Still Have to Work Together

01 Niche Fit Fixture must mount correctly
02 Voltage 12V or 120V as required
03 Cord Length Must reach junction point
04 Controls Especially for color lights
COMMON UPGRADE PATH

Older Incandescent Light → Modern LED

Customers often replace older high-wattage pool lights with modern LED fixtures while keeping the existing niche. The replacement does not need to match the old wattage — it needs to match the installation.

→
MODERN LIGHT LED
!
A traditional-niche retrofit and a nicheless conversion are not the same thing.

If the existing pool has a traditional wet niche, the easiest retrofit is usually a replacement fixture specifically designed for that niche format. Nicheless lighting uses a different mounting approach.

NICHE COMPATIBILITY

Light Niches Are Not Universal

Two pool lights can look almost identical from the water and still use different niche dimensions, mounting points or installation requirements.

ABOUT “STANDARD” NICHES

Standard Usually Means Common — Not Universal

Some replacement lights are designed to fit several common niche families, but that does not mean every full-size pool light will fit every full-size niche.

COMMON NICHE May Support Multiple Lights
≠
EVERY LIGHT Automatically Compatible
01
BEST REPLACEMENT RULE Identify the existing light or niche before choosing the replacement.

If the niche model is unknown, use the original light model, mounting style and installation details to narrow down compatibility.

!
Do not assume compatibility from appearance alone.

Even a light with the correct diameter and voltage can be incompatible if the niche depth, mounting point or approved installation differs.

LOW-VOLTAGE LIGHTING

Pool Light Transformers

A transformer reduces incoming electrical voltage to the lower voltage required by compatible pool and spa lights. It is an essential part of many 12V lighting systems.

INPUT Electrical Supply
TRANSFORMER STEPS VOLTAGE DOWN
OUTPUT Low-Voltage Light
WHAT DOES IT DO?

It Supplies the Correct Low Voltage to the Light

If the light is designed for low-voltage operation, the transformer changes the incoming supply to the output voltage required by the fixture.

SUPPLY → TRANSFORMER → LOW-VOLTAGE LIGHT
WHAT NEEDS TO MATCH?

Three Things Matter Most

01 Output Voltage Must match the light requirement
02 Transformer Capacity Must support the total connected load
03 System Compatibility Use equipment approved for the lighting setup

07 · RETAINING HARDWARE

Mounting Screw

Traditional fixtures commonly use a retaining screw or mounting point to secure the light into the niche.

WHY THE SEAL MATTERS

The Fixture Is Designed as a Sealed Assembly

The lens, gasket and housing work together to keep water away from the internal electrical components. When a serviceable fixture is opened, the correct replacement gasket and assembly procedure are important.

SEALED
PARTS VS. COMPLETE FIXTURE

Not Every Light Is Serviced the Same Way

TRADITIONAL LIGHT May Have Serviceable Components Depending on the model, items such as gaskets, lenses or lamps may be replaceable.
VS
MODERN SEALED LED May Be Replaced as an Assembly Some LED fixtures are designed as sealed units rather than individually serviceable lamp assemblies.
i
Exact parts vary by manufacturer and light family.

Always use the specific parts diagram or manual for the light model being serviced before ordering replacement components.

POOL LIGHT FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about pool and spa lights, niches, voltage, cord length, replacements and automation.

01 How do I know which pool light I need?

Start with the existing installation. Identify the light model if possible, then confirm the niche or fitting, voltage, required cord length and any color or automation controls.

02 Can I replace an older pool light with LED?

Often, yes. Many LED fixtures are designed to replace older incandescent or halogen lights. The replacement still needs to match the niche or fitting, voltage, cord route and control system.

03 Can I use my existing pool light niche?

In many installations, yes. Some replacement fixtures are designed for common existing niches. The exact niche and replacement light should still be verified before ordering.

04 Are all pool light niches universal?

No. Niches can differ in diameter, depth, mounting location and approved fixture compatibility. Similar appearance does not guarantee that a replacement will fit correctly.

05 What is the difference between pool lights and spa lights?

Traditional pool lights are generally larger and intended for broad illumination. Spa lights use a more compact fixture format for smaller water areas.

06 What is a nicheless pool light?

A nicheless light mounts through a compact wall fitting rather than a large traditional wet niche. Its smaller footprint allows more flexible placement around pools, spas, steps and benches.

07 Is a 120V pool light brighter than a 12V pool light?

No. Voltage describes the electrical requirements of the fixture, not how much light it produces. Brightness depends on the specific light design and output.

08 Does a 12V pool light need a transformer?

Low-voltage pool lights typically require a compatible transformer that provides the voltage specified by the fixture and enough capacity for the connected lighting load.

09 How do I know what cord length to order?

Measure the actual conduit route from the light to the junction point and account for any service length required by the installation.

10 Can a pool light cord simply be extended underwater?

Pool lights are normally supplied with a factory-attached cord selected to reach the approved junction point. A cord that is too short should not be treated as something that can simply be extended underwater.

11 Can I mix different brands of color pool lights?

Do not assume different brands will synchronize. Color sequences, control methods and automation compatibility can vary between lighting families.

12 Can color pool lights work with pool automation?

Many color-light families can work with compatible automation systems. The available features depend on the exact fixture and controller, so compatibility should be checked before purchase.

13 Can LED pool lights be used in saltwater pools?

Yes, compatible LED pool lights can be used in saltwater pools. Choose a fixture approved for the intended application and maintain proper water chemistry and electrical installation.

14 Do I need to replace the whole fixture if an LED light fails?

It depends on the model. Some traditional fixtures have individual serviceable components, while many modern LED lights use integrated or sealed assemblies.

15 What information should I have before ordering a replacement?

Have the existing model number if possible, light type, niche or fitting, voltage, required cord length and information about any controller or automation system being used.

?
STILL NOT SURE? Start with the existing model number or clear photos of the fixture.

The more information you have about the existing light, voltage, niche and controls, the easier it is to narrow down the correct replacement.
