Why Your Pentair WhisperFlo Pump Won't Prime (and How to Fix It)
A WhisperFlo pump that won't prime is one of the most common calls we get. The good news is it's usually a quick fix, not a sign your Pentair WhisperFlo VST (model 011533) is dying. Here's what actually causes it and how to walk through the fix yourself.
Why won't my WhisperFlo pump prime?
Nine times out of ten, it's air getting into the system somewhere between the pool and the pump, not a broken pump. The WhisperFlo VST needs a tight seal on the suction side to pull water, and even a small leak will keep it from priming.
Start with the basket lid. The o-ring under it dries out and cracks with age, and that's the single most common reason a WhisperFlo won't prime. If the lid looks fine, check the union fittings on either side of the pump for cracks or loose threads.
Check the water level and skimmer first
Low water level is an easy one to miss. If the pool water drops below the skimmer opening, the pump sucks air instead of water and will never prime, no matter how good the seals are.
Clear out the skimmer basket and pump basket too. A clogged basket restricts flow enough to stop the WhisperFlo VST from building suction, even with plenty of water in the pool.
Common causes of a WhisperFlo priming problem
- A dried out or cracked lid o-ring letting air into the pump
- Low water level exposing the skimmer to air
- A clogged skimmer or pump basket cutting off flow
- A closed or partially closed suction valve
- A cracked union or fitting on the suction side of the pump
- A worn shaft seal, which usually shows up as water dripping near the motor along with the priming issue
How do you fix a WhisperFlo VST that won't prime?
Work through it in this order so you're not guessing:
- Check and raise the pool water level if it's below the skimmer line
- Open the basket lid, clean it out, and inspect the o-ring for cracks or dry spots
- Lightly grease the o-ring with pool-safe lubricant and reseat the lid
- Make sure all suction valves are fully open
- Check unions and fittings near the pump for cracks or gaps
- If it still won't prime, the shaft seal is likely worn and letting air past the motor shaft
Most of the time, a new o-ring and a clean basket solve the problem completely. If you're still stuck after going through this list, the shaft seal is the next most likely culprit.
When does a priming problem mean it's time to repair instead of replace?
An o-ring, a shaft seal, or a cracked union are all cheap, simple fixes. None of them mean you need a new pump. The WhisperFlo VST is built to last for years, and priming issues are almost always a maintenance item, not a sign the whole pump is failing.
The only time replacement makes sense is if the motor itself has failed or the pump is old enough that you're replacing parts every season. For a single priming issue, repair is almost always the right call.
Keep your WhisperFlo VST running smoothly
A Pentair WhisperFlo that won't prime is almost never a reason to panic. Check the water level, clean the baskets, and inspect the lid o-ring before you assume the worst about your 011533 pump. Those three things solve most priming problems on their own.
