Pentair vs. Hayward Salt Cells: Compatibility & Cross-Reference Guide
We get this call almost every week. Someone's salt cell died, they found a good deal on a cell from the other brand, and they want to know if it'll work. So let's settle it. Here's how Pentair and Hayward salt cells actually line up, which cell fits which system, and what to check before you order a replacement.
Can you use a Pentair salt cell on a Hayward system (or vice versa)?
No. Pentair and Hayward salt cells are not compatible with each other. A Pentair IntelliChlor cell like the IC40 (520555) will not work on a Hayward AquaRite, and a Hayward TurboCell like the TCELLS340 will not work on a Pentair power center. This isn't a marketing trick. The two brands use different cord connectors, different electronics, and different plumbing unions.
If you plug the wrong cell in (assuming you could even get the connector to fit), the control board won't recognize it. Best case, you get a cell error and no chlorine. Worst case, you damage the board.
Why aren't salt cells interchangeable between brands?
Three reasons, and any one of them is enough to stop you.
- The cord and plug are different. Each brand uses its own connector, so the cell physically won't plug into the other brand's power supply.
- The electronics don't speak the same language. Modern cells report salt level, water temperature, and cell life back to the control board. A Pentair board expects Pentair signals. Feed it anything else and it reads as a fault.
- The unions are different sizes and threads. Even the plumbing side won't line up without adapters, and adapters don't solve the first two problems anyway.
Pentair salt cell cross-reference
Pentair cells pair with the IntelliChlor Power Center or with Pentair automation systems like EasyTouch and IntelliCenter that have salt chlorinator support built in. Match the cell to your pool size:
- IntelliChlor IC15 (EC-520888): pools up to 15,000 gallons
- IntelliChlor IC20 (520554): pools up to 20,000 gallons
- IntelliChlor IC40 (520555): pools up to 40,000 gallons, the most common residential size
- IntelliChlor IC60 (EC-521105): pools up to 60,000 gallons
- iChlor 15 and iChlor 30 (523080, 523009): compact systems for smaller pools and spas
Sizing tip that saves headaches later: it's fine to run a cell rated above your pool size. An IC40 on a 25,000 gallon pool runs at a lower output and usually lasts longer. Going undersized works the cell hard and wears it out early.
Hayward salt cell cross-reference
Hayward cells pair with AquaRite, AquaRite Pro, AquaRite S3, ProLogic, AquaPlus, and OmniLogic systems. The lineup by pool size:
- T-CELL-3 (W3T-CELL-3): pools up to 15,000 gallons
- T-CELL-9: pools up to 25,000 gallons
- T-CELL-15: pools up to 40,000 gallons
- TurboCell S3 series, like the TCELLS340: pools up to 40,000 gallons, made for the newer AquaRite S3 systems
One thing that trips people up: the TurboCell S3 cells are built for the AquaRite S3 platform. If you have an older AquaRite, check your manual or ask us before ordering, because the S3 cells and the classic T-Cells are not always a straight swap.
What about generic or knockoff cells?
Aftermarket cells exist for both brands, and some are cheaper up front. The catch is that plate quality and coating vary a lot, warranties are thinner, and some automation systems flag non-genuine cells. If your chlorinator is not producing chlorine and you're troubleshooting a no-name cell, you've added one more variable to rule out. We stick to genuine and known-quality cells for that reason.
Thinking about switching brands entirely?
You can switch from Hayward to Pentair or the other way, but you're replacing the whole salt system, not just the cell. That means the power center or control unit plus the cell, and rewiring at the pad. It usually only makes sense if your control board is also failing, or if you're moving to automation like EasyTouch or OmniLogic and want everything on one brand.
If your board is healthy, the smart money is a matching replacement cell. A new IC40 (520555) or TCELLS340 costs a lot less than a full system swap.
How to order the right cell the first time
Quick checklist before you buy. Find the model number on your current cell or control box. Match the brand and the platform (IntelliChlor vs. iChlor, AquaRite classic vs. AquaRite S3). Then match or exceed your pool's gallon rating. If any of those three are a question mark, send us the model number off your equipment and we'll confirm compatibility before you spend a dime.
