Pentair Valve Actuator Not Turning? How to Test and Replace It (Model 263045)
You hit the spa button, the panel says spa mode is on, and nothing happens. The water keeps running through the pool like nothing changed. When that happens, the usual suspect is a valve actuator that quit turning. On most Pentair systems, that part is the Pentair 263045 valve actuator, a 24V AC motor that rotates a 3-port diverter valve 180 degrees.
The good news is that testing an actuator takes about two minutes and you don't need any special tools. Here's how to figure out if yours is dead, and what to do about it.
What does the Pentair 263045 valve actuator actually do?
The 263045 is a small motorized unit that mounts on top of a 3-port diverter valve and turns it for you. Instead of walking out to the equipment pad and rotating the valve handle by hand, your automation system sends 24 volts to the actuator and it does the turning.
That's how your system switches water flow between pool and spa, or turns a water feature on and off. One actuator per valve. If a valve isn't moving when it should, the actuator sitting on it is where you start looking.
Why is my pool valve actuator not turning?
The most common reasons an actuator won't turn are a toggle switch left in the wrong position, no power coming from the automation panel, misadjusted cams, or stripped gears inside the unit. Here's the full list, roughly in order of how often we see each one:
- Toggle switch in the center OFF position. Every Pentair actuator has a small toggle switch on the side with three positions: ON1, OFF, and ON2. If someone bumped it to the center, the actuator is simply switched off. This fixes more "broken" actuators than any actual repair.
- No power from the panel. A loose plug at the load center, a damaged cable, or a problem with the circuit feeding the actuator means it never gets its 24 volts.
- Cams out of adjustment. The cams inside tell the actuator where to stop. If they've shifted, the actuator may think it's already at the end of its rotation and refuse to move.
- Stripped internal gears. The plastic gears wear out over time, especially on valves that are stiff or full of debris. You'll usually hear this one before you see it.
- Water intrusion. A cracked housing lets water reach the motor and switches. Once corrosion sets in, the unit is done.
How to test a Pentair valve actuator in two minutes
The fastest test is the toggle switch. Flip it from ON1 to ON2 (or the other way) and watch the valve. A healthy actuator will rotate to the other position right away.
- If the valve turns when you flip the switch, the actuator works. The problem is upstream, either in the automation panel settings or the wiring.
- If nothing happens at all, check that the actuator cable is plugged in firmly at the load center. Then try swapping its plug with an actuator that you know works. If the "dead" actuator turns on the other plug, your panel has the problem, not the actuator.
- If it still does nothing on a known good circuit, the actuator itself has failed.
Actuator clicking or grinding? That's the gears
A clicking, ratcheting, or grinding noise from the actuator almost always means stripped gears. The motor is spinning but the gears can't grab, so the valve never moves. Sometimes the valve turns partway and stalls, which points to the same thing.
Before you blame the actuator, pull it off and try turning the valve by hand with the handle. If the valve is stiff or seized, that resistance is what chewed up the gears in the first place. Service the valve or replace the diverter, or your new actuator will meet the same fate.
Can you repair a valve actuator, or should you replace it?
Replacement is almost always the right call. Pentair doesn't sell the internal gears or motor separately, and by the time an actuator strips or corrodes, the rest of the unit has the same hours on it.
