Pentair UltraTemp Heat Pump Not Heating or Display Dead? How to Tell If the Control Board Is Bad (472734)
A heat pump that goes quiet is frustrating, especially in the middle of the season. Customers call us about this all the time. The display is blank, or the panel lights up but the unit never actually starts heating.
Sometimes it really is the board. A lot of the time it isn't. Here is how we walk people through it before they spend money on a Pentair 472734 control board they may not need.
What does the Pentair 472734 control board actually do?
The 472734 is the control board assembly used in compatible Pentair UltraTemp and ThermalFlo heat pumps. It's the brain of the unit. It reads the sensors, decides when to call for heat, and switches power to the compressor and fan.
Because everything routes through it, a failed board can look like almost any other problem. That's exactly why it gets blamed more often than it deserves.
Why is my Pentair UltraTemp heat pump not heating?
Most no-heat calls come down to water flow, power, or a safety device doing its job. Work through these before you touch the board.
- Not enough water flow. Heat pumps need real flow to run. A dirty filter, a clogged pump basket, or a variable speed pump set too low will keep the unit locked out.
- Air temperature is too cold. Heat pumps pull warmth out of the air. When it gets cold outside, output drops hard and the unit may not fire at all. This is normal behavior, not a fault.
- Bad breaker or loose wiring. Check the breaker and the wiring at the disconnect. Corroded lugs and burnt wire ends are common on units that sit outside for years.
- Water pressure switch or high pressure switch tripped. These cut the unit off to protect the compressor. If one is stuck open, you get no heat even though everything else looks fine.
- Bad temperature sensor. If the board thinks the water is already warm, it won't call for heat.
- Thermostat set below current water temperature. It sounds obvious. It happens more than you'd think.
How to tell if the control board is bad
A bad board usually shows itself through power that goes in but nothing that comes out. If the board has proper incoming voltage and the safeties are all closed, but it still won't energize the contactor or the fan, the board is the likely suspect.
Here's a practical order to check things in:
- Kill power at the breaker before you open the cabinet. Give the unit a minute before you start working.
- Open it up and look at the board itself. Scorch marks, a swollen capacitor, cracked solder joints, melted connector housings, or rusty traces all point to a board that's done.
- Check for insect and rodent damage. Ants and mice get into outdoor heat pump cabinets constantly and they wreck boards.
- Verify the board is actually getting power from the transformer. No power in means the problem is upstream, not on the board.
- With power restored and the unit calling for heat, see whether the board sends voltage to the contactor. If it doesn't, and the safety switches are closed, that's your answer.
If any of that is outside your comfort zone, get a pool tech or an electrician on it. There's high voltage inside these cabinets and refrigerant lines you don't want to disturb.
Blank or frozen display: is that always the board?
No. A dead display is often a transformer, a blown fuse, or a broken ribbon or wiring connection between the panel and the board. Check those first.
That said, if power is confirmed good all the way to the board and the display still won't light or respond, the 472734 board is usually where the trail ends.
Is replacing the board worth it, or should you buy a new heat pump?
Compare the repair to the age of the unit. A control board replacement runs a few hundred dollars. A new UltraTemp heat pump runs several thousand.
If your heat pump is under roughly ten years old, the cabinet is solid, and the compressor and titanium heat exchanger are in good shape, replacing the control board is an easy call. If the unit is older and you've already replaced the compressor or fan motor, put that money toward a new heat pump instead.
