Your pump is running. Water is moving through the returns. And your Pentair MasterTemp still refuses to fire, or it lights for a minute and then drops out with a water flow warning. That combination points at one small part more often than anything else: the pressure switch.

It is a cheap part. It is also one of the most misdiagnosed ones, because a bad switch and a real flow problem look identical from the outside. Here is how to tell them apart.

What does the pressure switch on a MasterTemp do?

It is a safety device. The switch senses water pressure inside the heater and closes an electrical circuit only when there is enough flow to carry the heat away. No pressure, no closed circuit, no burner.

That is the whole job. Pentair MasterTemp and Sta-Rite Max-E-Therm heaters both use this style of switch, and the SW-41-060 is a direct-fit replacement for it. Without a working switch the heater will not fire at all, which is exactly what you want if the pump ever stops while the burner is lit.

Why does my heater say low water flow when the pump is running?

Because the switch is reading pressure, not flow. Anything that lowers the pressure at the heater will trip it, and so will a switch that has simply worn out.

The usual causes, roughly in the order we see them:

  • Dirty filter or a clogged pump basket, which chokes flow before it reaches the heater
  • A valve partly closed, or a heater bypass valve open too far
  • Air trapped in the system after opening the pump lid or backwashing
  • Debris or scale plugging the small port the switch threads into
  • A cracked or corroded switch that no longer closes at the right pressure
  • A loose or corroded wire on one of the switch terminals

Work through the easy stuff first. Clean the filter, empty the baskets, open every valve, and give the system a few minutes to purge air. If the heater still will not run, move on to testing the switch itself.

How do you test a MasterTemp pressure switch?

The fast test is a continuity check with the pump running. A good switch reads closed under normal pressure and open with the pump off.

  1. Shut off power to the heater at the breaker. This is not optional.
  2. Open the heater panel and find the pressure switch. It is the small round device threaded into the plumbing with two wires on it.
  3. Pull both wires off the terminals and label them.
  4. Set a multimeter to continuity. With the pump off, you should read open.
  5. Restore power to the pump only, get it running at full speed, and check continuity again. A healthy switch now reads closed.

If it stays open with the pump running and good pressure at the filter gauge, the switch is bad. If it reads closed and the heater still throws the same warning, the problem is somewhere else in the control circuit and the SW-41-060 will not fix it.

One more quick check people skip: jumper the two wires together for a second with the pump running. If the heater fires, that confirms the switch was the block. Do not leave it jumpered. That defeats the safety and can cook the heat exchanger.

How to replace the SW-41-060 pressure switch

This is a 15 minute job with basic tools. Power off at the breaker, pump off, and close the valves or drain the heater so you do not flood the cabinet.

  • Remove both wires from the old switch
  • Unthread the switch from its fitting, usually with a wrench on the hex base
  • Clear any debris out of the port and check that the small passage is open
  • Wrap the threads of the new SW-41-060 with a few turns of PTFE tape
  • Thread it in snug, then a small turn more. Do not crank on it, the housing is not made for that
  • Reattach the wires, open the valves, start the pump, then restore heater power

Watch for a drip at the threads for the first few minutes before you close the panel.

Is it worth replacing, or is the heater done?

A pressure switch is one of the cheapest repairs on a MasterTemp, so it is almost always worth trying when the test points to it. You are looking at a part under $60 and no labor if you do it yourself.

The math changes if the switch is the third or fourth failure in a season, or if the heat exchanger is leaking. At that point you are patching a heater that is telling you something. But a single bad pressure switch on an otherwise healthy MasterTemp or Max-E-Therm is a straightforward, low cost fix.
