Pentair Kreepy Krauly Rebel Not Moving or Losing Suction? Causes and Fixes (360486)

A Rebel that used to crawl the whole pool and now just sits in one corner is one of the most common calls we get. The good news is that a suction cleaner like this has very few moving parts, so the list of things that can go wrong is short. Most of the time you can sort it out in an afternoon without buying a whole new cleaner.

Here is how we walk customers through it, starting with the cheap stuff and working toward the part that actually fails: the cleaner head itself, sold as the Pentair 360486.

Why is my Kreepy Krauly Rebel not moving?

Nine times out of ten the Rebel stops moving because it is not getting enough suction, not because the cleaner is broken. Suction cleaners run entirely on the flow your pump pulls through the hose, so anything that chokes that flow stops the cleaner cold.

Check these in order before you touch the cleaner:

• Pump basket and skimmer basket. A basket packed with leaves will kill the flow the Rebel needs.
• Filter pressure. If your gauge is reading 8 to 10 psi above your clean starting pressure, backwash or clean the cartridges.
• Pump speed. On a variable speed pump, a lot of people run too low a rpm for a suction cleaner. Bump it up and see if the Rebel wakes up.
• Skimmer valve and vac plate. Make sure the suction is actually being directed to the line the cleaner is plugged into.

If the flow is good everywhere else and the Rebel still will not budge, move on to the hose.

Hose problems that stop a Rebel cold

Air in the hose is the second biggest cause. If you see bubbles coming out of your return jets while the cleaner is connected, you have a leak somewhere in the hose line and the cleaner will never get steady suction.

Pull the hose section by section and look for splits, especially near the cuffs where they twist. Hold each length underwater and watch for bubbles. Also make sure the hose is long enough to reach the far end of the pool. A short hose is a classic reason a cleaner works fine in half the pool and never touches the rest.

One more thing people miss: the hose needs to be laid out straight in the sun for a while before you use it. Coiled memory in a stiff hose fights the cleaner and keeps it circling the same spot.

The Rebel head is worn out (Pentair 360486)

If suction and hose both check out, the cleaner head is the problem. The Rebel V2 head contains the turbine, drive gears, and the internal parts that convert water flow into motion. Those wear down over a few seasons, and once they do the cleaner either crawls slowly, stalls, or stops climbing walls even though the suction is fine.

Signs the head itself is finished:

• You can hear the turbine rattling or grinding instead of a smooth hum.
• The wheels turn freely by hand but the cleaner barely creeps in the water.
• It moves but will not climb the wall anymore, even at higher pump speed.
• You have already replaced tires and hoses and nothing changed.

The Pentair 360486 is the OEM Rebel head sold on its own, without the hose set. If your hoses are still in good shape, this is the part you want. Swapping the head is a hose disconnect and reconnect, nothing more, so there is no tricky install.

Should you rebuild the Rebel or replace the head?

Rebuilding makes sense when only one thing is worn. Tires, wheel hubs, drive kits, and turbine kits are all sold separately and each one is inexpensive. If the tires are bald and everything else looks fine, buy tires.

Replacing the head with the 360486 makes more sense once two or three internal parts are worn at the same time. Add up the cost of a turbine kit, both drive kits, a gear kit, and the tires, and you are usually within range of a complete head anyway. A new head also resets the whole wear clock instead of leaving you with fresh parts bolted to a tired housing.

Parts that commonly go with the 360486

Even with a new Rebel head, it is worth checking a few things while you have the cleaner out of the pool:

• Tires, if the old ones are smooth or cracked. Worn tires are the number one reason a Rebel will not climb.
• Hose cuffs and any hose length that shows a split.
• The skimmer vac plate seal, if you connect through the skimmer.

Get those three right along with a healthy head and the cleaner should track the whole pool again. If your Rebel is still not moving after all of this, the issue is almost always plumbing side, and it is worth checking the suction line for a partial blockage.
