When an IntelliFlo stops running, most people assume the drive died. That is the computer on top of the pump, and yes, drives fail. Signs it is actually the drive
If the problem lives on the screen rather than in the sound of the pump, suspect the drive. A dead or scrambled display, error codes that will not clear, a keypad that does not respond, or a pump that runs fine until the drive heats up and then quits are all classic drive failures. How to check the motor before you order a 350305S
You can confirm most motor failures without any special tools. It takes a few minutes.
- Shut off power to the pump at the breaker. Not just the keypad, the breaker.
- Take off the back cover or reach the shaft end and try to rotate it by hand. It should turn smoothly with light resistance. Stiff, gritty, or frozen means bad bearings or a seized motor.
- Look for rust trails or calcium buildup where the motor meets the wet end. That means the shaft seal leaked and water got into the motor. Once that happens, the motor is done.
- Sniff around the motor housing. A sharp burnt smell means cooked windings.
- If the shaft spins free, there is no water damage, and the drive still throws errors or the pump still trips the breaker, have a tech meter the windings before you spend anything.
