Pentair IntelliConnect vs. IntelliCenter: What's the Difference?
Here's the short version. The Pentair IntelliConnect (model 523317) is a compact WiFi control box that lets you run up to 5 pieces of pool equipment from your phone. The Pentair IntelliCenter is a full automation panel that manages your entire pool and spa, including valves, lighting shows, heaters, and salt systems, all from one load center. One is a smart add-on. The other is the brain of the whole backyard.
We get this question at the counter all the time. Both systems carry the Pentair name, both work with the Pentair Home app, and both promise pool control from your phone. But they solve different problems at very different prices. Let's break down which one actually fits your pool.
What is the Pentair IntelliConnect 523317?
The IntelliConnect 523317 is Pentair's entry-level smart pool control. It connects to your home WiFi and gives you app control over up to 5 devices, with two relays for things like a single-speed pump or a light, plus direct communication with Pentair variable speed pumps, IntelliChlor salt cells, and compatible heaters.
Think of it as a smart middleman. Your equipment stays where it is, and the IntelliConnect sits on the wall nearby telling it what to do. Installation is simple compared to a full panel swap, which is a big part of why people pick it.
What is the Pentair IntelliCenter?
IntelliCenter is Pentair's flagship automation platform. It's a complete load center with a personality kit (the i5P version handles 5 circuits on a pool-only setup, and larger versions go up from there) that becomes the electrical and control hub for all your equipment.
That means real breaker space, valve actuator control for pool and spa switching, color light show coordination, heater management, salt chlorinator control, and scheduling for everything at once. You can run it from the panel itself, a wall-mounted indoor panel, or the app.
What can each one control?
The honest answer: IntelliCenter controls more, and controls it better. Here's how the two compare in practice:
- IntelliConnect 523317: up to 5 devices total. Great for a pump, a salt cell, a heater, and a light or two. No valve actuator support, so it can't switch between pool and spa.
- IntelliCenter: 5 to 10+ circuits depending on the personality kit, plus valve actuators, multiple light zones, spa-side remotes, and expansion panels if your setup grows.
If you have a spa attached to your pool, that valve control point matters a lot. The IntelliConnect simply can't move water between pool and spa. That job needs IntelliCenter or another panel-based system.
How much does each system cost?
The IntelliConnect 523317 runs around $549. An IntelliCenter load center with the i5P personality kit (model 523448) starts around $1,799.99 before installation. Wiring a full load center is also a bigger electrical job, so plan on higher install labor for IntelliCenter too.
That gap is the whole decision for a lot of pool owners. If your equipment list is short and you just want app control, spending three times more on a panel you'll never fully use doesn't make sense.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the IntelliConnect 523317 if you have a simple pool (no attached spa), 5 or fewer devices, and your main goal is running your pump, salt cell, heater, and a light from your phone. It's the cheapest way into Pentair automation and it installs fast.
Buy the IntelliCenter if you have a pool and spa combo, more than 5 pieces of equipment, color lighting you want synced, or any plans to expand. It costs more up front, but nobody has ever regretted having extra circuits available when they add a water feature two summers later.
One more thing worth knowing: both systems use the same Pentair Home app, so the day-to-day phone experience feels similar. The difference is what's happening behind the app, and how much equipment each system can actually reach.
