Pentair IntelliBrite 5G Pool Light vs. Spa Light: What's the Difference? (601001 vs 640120)
We get this question all the time. Someone needs a new IntelliBrite 5G, they search the model, and they end up staring at two lights that look the same in photos. One is the 601001 pool light. The other is the 640120 spa light. The price difference isn't huge, so which one do you buy?
They are not interchangeable. Pick the wrong one and it either won't fit your niche or won't put out enough light. Here's how to sort it out in about two minutes.
What's the difference between the IntelliBrite 5G pool light and spa light?
The short answer: size and brightness. The 601001 pool light runs at 26 watts and is built for full-size pool niches. The 640120 spa light runs at 18 watts and is built for the smaller niches used in spas and compact water features.
Both are 120V LED fixtures from the same IntelliBrite 5G family. Both do the same multi-color thing, with fixed colors plus preprogrammed light shows. From the front of the lens, they look like siblings. The housing size and light output are where they part ways.
That 26W vs 18W gap matters more than it sounds. A pool has a lot more water to push light through than a spa does. The pool version is sized for that job. The spa version is sized for a small, shallow body of water where 26 watts would be overkill.
Can you put a spa light in a pool (or a pool light in a spa)?
Usually not, and you shouldn't try. The fixtures are sized for different niches, so the pool light generally won't seat in a spa niche, and a spa light in a full-size pool niche is a poor fit and a dim result even if you rig it in.
If a light isn't seated correctly in its niche, you can also run into sealing and safety issues, and nobody wants that in a body of water. Match the fixture to the niche it was designed for. If you're not sure what niche you have, pull the old light and check the fixture diameter and the niche brand before ordering anything.
Which model number do you actually need?
Once you know pool vs spa, the rest comes down to cord length. Here's the current IntelliBrite 5G multi-color lineup we stock:

- 601002: pool light, 26W, 120V, 100 ft cord
- 640120: spa light, 18W, 120V, 30 ft cord

To pick a cord length, measure from the niche, up out of the water, and along the full path to the junction box. Then add a few feet of slack so the light can be pulled up onto the deck for future service. Buy longer than that measurement, never shorter. You should not splice a pool light cord.
Do the pool and spa lights work together?
Yes. They come from the same product family, so a 601001 in the pool and a 640120 in the spa can run matching colors and shows. On a pool and spa combo, that's the usual setup.
If you have Pentair automation like EasyTouch, IntelliTouch, or IntelliCenter, both lights can be controlled from the same system. If you don't have automation, the lights change modes through simple power cycling at the switch. Same behavior on both models.
Replacing an old IntelliBrite? Match the model, not the look
If your old IntelliBrite 5G stopped working, the safest move is to replace it with the same category of light: pool for pool, spa for spa, and a cord at least as long as the old one. Check the label on your existing fixture if you can still read it.
One more tip before you order. If your current light is 12V (some IntelliBrite models are), do not swap in a 120V version without checking your transformer and wiring setup. Voltage has to match what your system was built for.
