Pentair IntelliBrite 5G Pool Light Not Changing Colors? How to Fix It (Model 601001)

Pentair IntelliBrite 5G multi-color LED pool light, model 601001

A customer called us last week convinced his IntelliBrite 5G was dead because it sat on blue no matter what he did. It wasn't dead. It just needed a proper reset. That happens a lot with this light, so here's the full rundown on the Pentair IntelliBrite 5G (model 601001), why it gets stuck on one color, and how to fix it.

Quick background first. The IntelliBrite 5G changes colors based on how you cycle the power to it. Flip the light switch off and back on, and it advances to the next color or light show. There's no separate control wire. That design is simple, but it also means most "not changing colors" complaints come down to power and timing, not a bad light.

Why is my IntelliBrite 5G stuck on one color?

The most common reason an IntelliBrite 5G won't change colors is that the power cycles are too fast or too slow for the light to register them. The light needs a clean off-and-on within a specific window to advance. If you flick the switch too quickly, or your automation relay chatters, the light just stays where it is.

Other common causes include:

  • The light is set to a fixed color mode and simply needs to be cycled to a different setting
  • An automation system (EasyTouch, IntelliCenter, IntelliConnect) is sending its own commands that fight with manual switching
  • Voltage drop on a long cord run, which can make the light behave oddly
  • An internal driver board that's starting to fail, which usually shows up as random colors or flickering first

How to reset a Pentair IntelliBrite 5G (601001)

To reset the IntelliBrite 5G, turn the light off at the switch or breaker, leave it off for at least 11 seconds, then turn it back on. That longer off period tells the light to start fresh instead of advancing to the next mode. From there, cycle the switch off and on (about a second or two each time) to step through the colors and shows until you land on the one you want.

If you're running the light from a Pentair automation system, do the reset from the automation interface instead of the wall switch. Pick the color or show you want in the app or panel and let the system do the cycling. Mixing manual switch flips with automation commands is the fastest way to confuse this light.

What if the light won't turn on at all?

If your IntelliBrite 5G won't turn on, check power before you blame the light. Start at the breaker and GFCI. A tripped GFCI is the number one cause of a pool light that's completely dark, and these lights are almost always on a GFCI-protected circuit.

  • Reset the GFCI and the breaker, then test the light again
  • Check the connections in the junction box for corrosion or loose wires
  • Confirm you have the right voltage at the junction box. Model 601001 is the 120V version, and there's a separate 12V version, so a mismatch causes real problems
  • If the GFCI keeps tripping the moment the light comes on, water may have gotten into the fixture. Look for moisture or fogging behind the lens

A light that keeps tripping the GFCI or has water inside it is not worth opening up. The LED array and driver are sealed in the fixture, and once water reaches them, replacement is the realistic fix.

Colors flickering or cycling on their own?

Flickering or random color changes usually point to a power delivery problem or an aging driver board. Loose neutral connections, a worn relay in the automation panel, or a corroded splice in the junction box can all cause tiny power interruptions, and the light reads each one as a command to change modes.

Tighten and clean the connections first. If the wiring checks out and the light still acts up, the internal electronics are the likely culprit. These fixtures aren't user-serviceable, so at that point you're deciding between living with it and replacing it.

Repair or replace the 601001?

If the fix is a reset, a GFCI, or a junction box connection, repair costs you nothing but time. If the fixture itself has failed (water intrusion, dead LEDs, a driver that won't hold a mode), replacement is the answer, because Pentair doesn't sell the internal parts separately for this light.

The good news is that swapping an IntelliBrite 5G is a straightforward job. The new light comes with its own cord, so you pull the old fixture, feed the new cord back through the conduit, and make up the connections in the junction box. Most installers can do it in under an hour without draining the pool.
