Pentair IntelliBrite 5G Cord Length Guide: 50 Ft or 100 Ft? (601001 vs 601002)
Here is a question we get all the time at the counter. Someone needs a Pentair IntelliBrite 5G color light, they pull up the 601001 and the 601002, and they can't tell what's different. The answer is simple. It's the cord.
The Pentair 601001 comes with a 50 ft cord. The Pentair 601002 comes with a 100 ft cord. That's it. Same 26 watt multi-color LED, same 120V fixture, same colors and light shows. But picking the wrong length can stop your install cold, so it's worth two minutes to get it right.
What's the difference between the 601001 and 601002?
Cord length is the only difference. Both are the IntelliBrite 5G multi-color LED pool light, 26 watts, 120 volts. The 601001 has 50 feet of cord and the 601002 has 100 feet.
Everything else matches. Fixed colors, color shows, the works. So you're not paying extra for a better light with the 601002. You're paying for 50 more feet of cord, and if your run needs it, that extra cord is worth every penny.
How long does your pool light cord need to be?
Measure the full path from the light niche, through the conduit, all the way to the junction box. Then add enough slack to pull the fixture up onto the deck for service.
That service slack matters more than people think. When a bulb-era light died, you didn't drain the pool to work on it. You pulled the fixture out of the niche and set it on the deck, and the coiled cord stored behind the light made that possible. The same rule applies here. Plan for roughly 3 to 4 extra feet beyond the water surface so the light can sit on the deck.
So your math looks like this:
- Distance from the niche, through the conduit, to the junction box
- Plus slack to lift the light onto the deck (a few extra feet)
- Plus a little buffer for bends in the conduit run, which always eat more cord than a straight tape measure suggests
If that total lands anywhere near 50 feet, don't gamble. Go with the 100 ft cord on the 601002.
Can you splice or extend a pool light cord?
No. Don't splice a pool light cord, period. The cord on the IntelliBrite 5G is molded to the fixture, and a splice buried in conduit or sitting in a wet niche is a safety problem, a code problem, and a warranty problem all at once.
This is the whole reason Pentair sells the same light with different cord lengths. If your run is longer than the cord, the fix is buying the right cord length, not extending a short one. It's also why we tell people to measure before ordering. Returning a pool light because the cord came up 6 feet short is a headache nobody needs.
What if you buy more cord than you need?
Extra cord is fine. Coil the surplus neatly behind the fixture in the niche and at the junction box. A 601002 with 30 feet of unused cord works exactly like a 601001, it just cost a bit more.
That's why, when someone isn't sure of their measurement, we point them to the 100 ft version. The price gap between the 601001 and 601002 is small compared to the cost of pulling a too-short cord back out of the conduit and starting over.
Which IntelliBrite 5G should you buy?
Buy the 601001 if your measured run, with slack, stays comfortably under 50 feet. That covers most pools where the junction box sits near the equipment side of the pool. Buy the 601002 if the run is longer, if the junction box is far from the niche, or if you couldn't measure and need to be safe.
One compatibility note before you order. Both of these are 120V fixtures, so confirm your existing light circuit is 120V and not a 12V low-voltage setup with a transformer. Pentair makes a separate 12V version of this light, and the two are not interchangeable. If you're replacing an existing IntelliBrite or an older incandescent fixture in a standard large niche, check the voltage on the old light's label first.
The bottom line on the 601001 vs 601002
Same light, different cord. Measure niche to junction box, add deck slack, and let that number pick for you. Under 50 feet with room to spare, the 601001 does the job. Anywhere close to the limit or beyond it, the 601002 is the safe call.
