Out of Relays? When You Need a Hayward OmniLogic Expansion Panel (HLEXPAND)

Hayward HLEXPAND OmniLogic expansion panel for pool automation systems

It usually happens right after you add something new to the pool. A booster pump, some landscape lighting, maybe a water feature. You open the OmniLogic config wizard to set it up and there's nothing left to assign it to. Every output is taken. That's the exact problem the Hayward HLEXPAND expansion panel was built to solve.

What does the Hayward HLEXPAND actually do?

The HLEXPAND is an add-on panel that gives your existing Hayward OmniLogic system more capacity. It adds extra relays and outputs so you can control more equipment without replacing the automation system you already own.

Once it's wired in, your OmniLogic treats the new outputs like part of the original panel. You still control everything from the same app and the same controller. Nothing about your daily routine changes. You just have more room.

How do you know your OmniLogic is maxed out?

The clearest sign is simple: you try to add new equipment in the configuration menu and there's no open relay or output left to give it. If that's you, the base panel is full.

A few other signs point the same direction:

  • Every relay in your panel already has a pump, light, or blower assigned to it.
  • You have equipment on the pad running off a plain mechanical timer because the automation had no room for it.
  • Your electrician or pool builder told you the panel can't take another circuit.
  • You're planning an addition (spa, water feature, second heater) and counting outputs shows you'll come up short.

What can you run off an HLEXPAND expansion panel?

Anything you'd normally run off the main OmniLogic panel. The expansion panel handles the same kinds of loads, which makes it useful for:

  • Extra pumps, like a booster pump for a pressure cleaner or a water feature pump
  • Additional lighting circuits for the pool, spa, or yard
  • More valve actuators for routing water where you want it
  • Other equipment on the pad that needs a switched circuit

The point is flexibility. Pools tend to grow over the years, and the equipment pad grows with them. The HLEXPAND lets your automation keep up.

Expansion panel vs. replacing the whole system

If your OmniLogic works fine and you just ran out of room, an expansion panel is the cheaper and less disruptive fix. Replacing a working automation system means new wiring, new setup, and a bigger bill for hardware and labor.

Replacement only starts to make sense if your current system is old, unsupported, or failing. For example, if you're still on an older ProLogic, the better move is a retrofit kit to a modern Omni platform, not an expansion. But if you already have OmniLogic and it runs well, adding an HLEXPAND keeps everything you like and fixes the one thing you don't.

Installation notes for the HLEXPAND

This is a high voltage panel, so plan on having a licensed electrician or a pool professional install it. It mounts near your existing OmniLogic and connects to it so the two work as one system.

  • Mount it close to the main panel to keep wiring runs short and clean.
  • Power comes from your home's electrical supply, sized for the loads you plan to run.
  • After the physical install, the new outputs get assigned in the OmniLogic configuration menu, the same way you set up your original equipment.

Setup on the software side is the easy part. Most owners can handle assigning the new relays themselves once the wiring is done.

Is the HLEXPAND right for your setup?

If you have a Hayward OmniLogic and you've run out of relays or outputs, yes, the HLEXPAND is the part made for exactly that. If you're running a different Hayward system, or you're not sure what panel you have, send us a photo of your setup before ordering. It takes two minutes and it beats buying a panel that doesn't fit your system.
