IntelliChlor IC40 vs. IC60: Which Salt Cell Do You Need?

Pentair IntelliChlor IC40 salt cell for pools up to 40,000 gallons

Shopping for a Pentair salt cell usually comes down to two models, the IntelliChlor IC40 and the IntelliChlor IC60. They look almost identical, they fit the same plumbing, and they work with the same equipment. So the real question is whether the extra cost of the IC60 is worth it for your pool. Here's how we help customers decide.

What's the difference between the IC40 and the IC60?

The short answer is capacity. The IntelliChlor IC40 is rated for pools up to 40,000 gallons, and the IC60 is rated for pools up to 60,000 gallons. The IC60 simply produces more chlorine per day.

Beyond output, they're the same product family. Same housing style, same unions, same power center, same flow requirements, same communication with Pentair automation. You can swap one for the other without touching your plumbing.

How do I know which size fits my pool?

Match the cell rating to your pool volume, then round up if you're close to the line. If you don't know your gallons, a quick estimate for a rectangular pool is length x width x average depth x 7.5.

  • Under 25,000 gallons: the IC40 has plenty of headroom. Buying an IC60 here isn't wrong, but it's rarely necessary.
  • 25,000 to 40,000 gallons: the IC40 will do the job, but the IC60 will do it working a lot less hard. This is the range where the upgrade makes the most sense.
  • Over 40,000 gallons: get the IC60. An IC40 on a big pool has to run near 100% output all season and may still fall behind in the heat of summer.

Why buying the bigger cell can save you money

A salt cell wears out based on hours spent producing chlorine, so a cell that meets demand at a lower output setting tends to last longer. That's the main argument for the IC60 on a mid-size pool.

Think of it this way. An IC40 running at 80% output and an IC60 running at 50% can make roughly the same amount of chlorine, but the IC60 is coasting while the IC40 is grinding. Cells aren't cheap, so stretching the replacement interval by a season or two matters. Warm climates and long swim seasons tip the math even further toward the bigger cell.

Is the IC60 compatible with my existing setup?

In most cases, yes. Both cells plug into the same IntelliChlor power center, and both are compatible with Pentair automation systems like EasyTouch and IntelliCenter that have salt chlorine generator support. If your IC40 died and you want to step up to an IC60, it's usually a direct swap.

One thing to check first: some older or smaller power supplies were sold for specific cell sizes. If your system is more than a decade old, send us the model number on your power center before ordering and we'll confirm it can drive the IC60.

IC40 vs. IC60 replacement cost

The price gap is smaller than most people expect. The IntelliChlor IC40 (part 520555) runs $1,799 and the IntelliChlor IC60 (part EC-521105) runs $1,999. That's about $200 for 50% more chlorine capacity.

If your pool is small, save the $200. If you're anywhere near the upper end of the IC40's rating, the IC60 is one of the easier upsells to justify because you'll likely get the money back in cell life.

So which salt cell do you need?

Buy the IntelliChlor IC40 if your pool is under about 30,000 gallons and you're in a moderate climate. Buy the IntelliChlor IC60 if your pool is over 30,000 gallons, you run a long season, or you just want the cell working at a lower setting so it lasts longer. Either way you're getting the same proven IntelliChlor design, just sized differently.
