How to Winterize a Pentair IntelliFlo Variable Speed Pump

Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF 1.5HP variable speed pool pump, model 011065

A cracked pump housing is one of the most expensive winter mistakes a pool owner can make. Water left inside a Pentair IntelliFlo freezes, expands, and splits the wet end. Freeze damage isn't covered under warranty either, so that mistake comes straight out of your pocket.

The fix is cheap. Winterizing an IntelliFlo takes about 20 minutes with basic hand tools. These steps apply to the whole family, from the older IntelliFlo VSF (011056) up to the current IntelliFlo3 VSF (011065). The drain plug locations shift a little between models but the process is the same.

Do you actually need to winterize an IntelliFlo pump?

If your area sees freezing temperatures and you close the pool for the season, yes. Any water trapped in the pump body can freeze and crack the housing, the seal plate, or the strainer pot. In mild climates where the pool runs all year, you can skip draining and rely on freeze protection instead. More on that below.

When should you winterize?

Before the first hard freeze, full stop. Most owners in cold climates do it when overnight lows start dipping toward the mid 30s. One night in the low 20s is enough to crack a full strainer pot, so don't gamble on the forecast being wrong in your favor.

How to drain a Pentair IntelliFlo pump for winter

The short version: cut power, pull both drain plugs, empty the basket, and get the water out. Here's the full sequence.

  • Shut off power at the breaker, not just the pump keypad. You don't want a schedule or freeze protection kicking the pump on while it's dry.
  • Remove both drain plugs from the bottom of the pump housing. On the IntelliFlo3 VSF (011065) there's one on the strainer pot and one on the volute. Let the pump drain completely.
  • Take off the strainer lid, pull the basket, and dump out any leaves or debris. Rinse the basket and let it dry.
  • Get remaining water out of the housing. A wet/dry vac on the drain openings works well. Even a cup of leftover water can freeze and do damage.
  • Drop the drain plugs into the strainer basket so you can find them in spring. This is the oldest trick in the book and it works.
  • If your pump is plumbed with unions, crack them loose a quarter turn so trapped water in the fittings can escape.
  • Leave the lid resting on top loosely or set it in the basket. Don't seal the pump up tight, since airflow helps it stay dry inside.

Should you bring the pump inside for winter?

You don't have to if it's fully drained, but it doesn't hurt. If your IntelliFlo is plumbed with unions and comes out easily, storing it in a garage or shed keeps snow, ice, and rodents away from the drive electronics. If it stays outside, a breathable pump cover is fine. Avoid wrapping it in plastic, which traps moisture against the drive.

What about freeze protection mode?

Freeze protection is for pools that stay open, not a substitute for draining. When the IntelliFlo3 VSF (011065) is tied into a Pentair automation system, freeze protection runs the pump during a cold snap so moving water can't freeze in the plumbing. That works great in Texas or Arizona. It does not help you if the power goes out at 2 a.m. in January, which is exactly why closed pools in cold climates get drained instead.

Why won't my IntelliFlo turn on in spring?

The usual suspects are simple: drain plugs never went back in, the lid o-ring is dry or pinched, or the breaker was left off. Before assuming the pump is broken, check that both plugs are snug, lube the lid o-ring, fill the strainer pot with water to help it prime, and confirm power at the breaker. If the pump powers up but won't prime, an air leak at the lid or unions is the most common cause. If the drive shows no display at all with confirmed power, that's when it's time to look at troubleshooting the drive itself.

When replacing beats winterizing

If a past freeze already cracked your housing, or your pump is an old single speed unit limping along, put the 20 minutes toward a swap instead. The IntelliFlo3 VSF (011065) is a 1.5HP variable speed pump that typically cuts pumping energy use dramatically compared to a single speed, and many utilities offer rebates on variable speed upgrades. Winterize it right each fall and it should give you a long service life.
