How Much Does a Pentair IntelliFlo Drive Replacement Cost?
Short answer: a genuine Pentair IntelliFlo drive replacement costs roughly $600 to $1,100. The exact price depends on which drive your pump takes and whether the kit includes a keypad. The main OEM part numbers are 356878Z, 356944Z, 356922Z, and 356971Z, and we stock all four.
If your IntelliFlo won't turn on, the display is dead, or the keypad shows an error code but the motor itself is fine, there's a good chance the drive is the problem. That's actually good news. The drive sits on top of the motor and swaps out as one piece, so you can fix the pump without replacing the whole thing.
What does each IntelliFlo drive replacement cost?
Here are the current prices for the four main OEM drive assemblies, straight from our shelf:
- Pentair 356878Z (IntelliFlo and IntelliPro VS drive, drive only): $895.99. This is for the older VS style pumps.
- Pentair 356944Z (IntelliFlo VSF drive, no keypad): $899.99. Fits most IntelliFlo VSF pumps like the 011056 and 022056, except SVRS models. Your existing keypad carries over.
- Pentair 356971Z (IntelliFlo VSF drive kit with keypad): $1,058.99. A complete drive unit for compatible VSF pumps.
- Pentair 356922Z (IntelliFlo and IntelliPro VSF drive kit with keypad): $1,099.00. The full kit, drive plus keypad, and the one we sell the most of.
We also carry a refurbished VSF drive (356944ZR, no keypad) for $599 when it's in stock. That's the cheapest way to get a dead IntelliFlo running again if you're okay with refurbished parts.
How do I know the drive is bad and not the motor?
A failed drive usually shows up as a pump that won't turn on at all, a blank or flickering display, or a keypad that lights up but won't respond. The motor windings underneath are often still perfectly healthy.
A few quick checks before you spend money:
- Confirm the pump is actually getting power at the breaker. A tripped breaker or a bad connection causes plenty of "dead pump" calls.
- If the breaker keeps tripping the moment the pump starts, that points more toward the motor or wiring than the drive.
- If the display is dead but the pump has power, or the pump throws drive related error codes and won't clear them after a reset, the drive is the usual suspect.
- A pump that hums or runs when commanded manually but has a dark, unresponsive control panel is a classic drive failure.
Which drive is compatible with my pump?
Match the drive to your pump model, not to what looks similar in photos. VS pumps take the 356878Z. Most VSF pumps take the 356944Z, 356971Z, or 356922Z depending on whether you need the keypad included.
Check the data plate on your pump for the model number before ordering. If your pump is an SVRS model, stop here, because the standard VSF drives like the 356944Z do not fit SVRS pumps. And if your keypad still works fine, the no keypad 356944Z saves you a couple hundred dollars over the full 356922Z kit.
Is replacing the drive worth it, or should I buy a new pump?
If the motor is healthy, replacing the drive is almost always the cheaper fix. A new IntelliFlo3 pump runs well north of what any of these drives cost, so a $900 to $1,100 drive swap that saves an otherwise good pump is money well spent.
The math changes if your pump is old. When a pump is pushing 10 years and the wet end, seals, and bearings are all tired, putting a $1,099 drive on it can be throwing good money after bad. In that case price out a new pump before you commit.
Can I install an IntelliFlo drive myself?
Yes, most pool owners can handle it. The drive unbolts from the top of the motor, the wiring connections transfer over, and the new drive bolts down in its place. Kill power at the breaker first, take a photo of the wiring before you disconnect anything, and give yourself about an hour.
If you're not comfortable working around 230 volt equipment, a pool tech can do the swap quickly, and you'll still come out way ahead of a full pump replacement.
The bottom line on IntelliFlo drive replacement cost
Plan on $895.99 for the 356878Z VS drive, $899.99 for the 356944Z VSF drive without keypad, $1,058.99 for the 356971Z kit, or $1,099 for the 356922Z kit with keypad. Refurbished units run around $599 when available. Compared to a new variable speed pump, a drive replacement is the budget friendly fix as long as the motor under it is still good.
