High Filter Pressure and Cloudy Water? How to Tell Your Hayward CX1200RE Cartridge Is Worn Out
Here's a call we get all the time. The pool water looks cloudy, the pressure gauge is reading higher than normal, and the owner has already hosed off the cartridge twice. Nothing changes. Nine times out of ten, the cartridge itself is simply worn out.
If you run a Hayward C1200 or Star-Clear Plus filter, that cartridge is the CX1200RE. It gives you 120 square feet of filter area, and like any cartridge, it has a limited working life. Cleaning restores some of it. It never restores all of it.
How do you know a CX1200RE cartridge is worn out?
A cartridge is done when cleaning no longer brings the filter pressure back down to its normal starting number, or when the water stays cloudy even though pump run time and chemistry are fine. Those two signs together are close to a sure thing.
Look at the cartridge itself too. Pull it out and check for:
- Pleats that look flattened, frayed, or fuzzy instead of crisp
- Cracks in the top or bottom end caps
- Fabric that stays gray or brown after a thorough rinse
- Tears or thin spots you can see light through
- Bands that have snapped or slipped off the pleats
Any one of those means the element is past cleaning. Damaged fabric or cracked end caps let unfiltered water sneak straight through, which is why the pool stays cloudy no matter what you do.
Why is my filter pressure still high after cleaning?
High pressure right after a cleaning usually means the pleats are clogged with stuff a garden hose can't remove. Oils, sunscreen, and fine mineral deposits work deep into the fabric over time and block flow permanently.
A soak in a proper cartridge cleaner can buy you a season if the fabric is still in good shape. But if you soak it, rinse it, and the gauge still starts 4 or 5 PSI above where a fresh cartridge would, the fabric is blinded. No amount of soaking brings it back. That's when a replacement CX1200RE is the fix, not another cleaning.
How long should this cartridge last?
Most owners get about 2 to 3 seasons out of a cartridge with normal use and regular cleanings. Heavy bather loads, lots of debris, or letting the pressure run high for weeks at a time will shorten that.
A quick rule of thumb: if you've cleaned it more than a dozen times, or it's been in service more than three years, put a new one on your shopping list before it fails mid-season.
How to replace the cartridge in a C1200 or Star-Clear Plus
Swapping the element takes about 15 minutes and no special tools. Here's the short version:
- Turn off the pump and kill power at the breaker
- Open the air relief valve on top of the filter to release pressure
- Remove the locking knob or clamp and lift off the filter head
- Pull the old cartridge straight up and out
- Rinse out the tank body while it's open
- Drop in the new CX1200RE, seat it on the standpipe, and check the head O-ring for cracks (a little pool lube on it helps the seal)
- Reassemble, close the relief valve once water sprays out steadily, and note your new clean starting pressure
Write that starting pressure on the tank with a marker. From now on, clean the cartridge whenever the gauge climbs 8 to 10 PSI above that number.
Make sure you get the right cartridge
The CX1200RE is the correct element for the Hayward C1200 and compatible Star-Clear Plus filters rated at 120 square feet. Smaller Star-Clear Plus tanks use different elements, so check the label on your tank or the number molded into your old cartridge before ordering.
Buying a knockoff element is tempting, but the cheap ones often use less fabric and looser end cap tolerances. That means shorter life and bypass around the caps. A genuine CX1200RE costs a bit more up front and usually outlasts two of the off-brand ones.
Bottom line: if cleaning doesn't fix high pressure or cloudy water anymore, the cartridge is telling you it's finished. A fresh CX1200RE brings the filter back to like-new flow, and your water clears up within a day or two of normal circulation.
