Hayward TriStar VS 900 vs. VS 950: Which Variable Speed Pump Do You Need?
Hayward sells two TriStar VS pumps that look almost the same sitting on a shelf. One is the TriStar VS 900 (SP32900VSP) and the other is the TriStar VS 950 (SP32950VSP). Same family, same look, different motor size. People mix them up all the time, and the wrong choice either costs extra money up front or leaves you short on flow later.
Here is how to tell them apart in plain terms.
What is the difference between the TriStar VS 900 and the TriStar VS 950?
The horsepower. The SP32900VSP TriStar VS 900 is rated 1.85 total HP. The SP32950VSP TriStar VS 950 is rated 2.7 total HP. That is the main thing separating them.
Both are true variable speed pumps. Both use a permanent magnet motor that you program to run at different speeds instead of one fixed speed all day. Both share the TriStar wet end design, both are quiet once you drop the RPM, and both are built to meet current energy rules. The 950 simply has more muscle available when you call for it.
Which TriStar VS pump is right for my pool?
Most normal residential pools do fine on the 900. The 950 is for pools that ask more of the pump. A quick way to sort it out:
- Standard in ground pool, roughly 15,000 to 30,000 gallons, filter and returns only: SP32900VSP
- Bigger pool, long runs of pipe, or plumbing that is only 1.5 inch: SP32950VSP
- Attached spa with jets you actually use: SP32950VSP
- Waterfall, sheer descent, bubblers or deck jets on the same pump: SP32950VSP
- Pressure side cleaner running off the main pump: SP32950VSP
- Replacing an old 2 HP or larger single speed pump: SP32950VSP
If you are still on the fence, look at what came off the pad. Matching the old pump's horsepower, or going one step up, is the safe move. Going smaller only works if the old pump was oversized to begin with, which does happen on older builds.
Do I really need 2.7 HP?
Probably not, if all your pump does is pull water through a filter and push it back through the returns. That job does not need a big motor.
Where the 2.7 HP of the SP32950VSP earns its keep is anything that needs real pressure or real volume at once. Spa jets are the obvious one. Heaters with tight internal passages, cartridge filters that are undersized, and older 1.5 inch plumbing all add resistance, and a bigger motor gives you room to push through it without running flat out. If none of that applies to your setup, the TriStar VS 900 will do the same daily filtering for less money.
Which one saves more on the power bill?
They save about the same, because the savings come from running slow, not from the motor size. A variable speed pump at low RPM uses a small fraction of the power a single speed pump uses, and that is true of both models.
One thing worth knowing: a larger pump running at low speed is not wasteful. The SP32950VSP at 1,400 RPM does not burn much more than the SP32900VSP at the same RPM. So buying the bigger pump does not automatically mean a bigger bill. It mostly means a bigger sticker price.
Will either pump work with my automation system?
Yes. Both the TriStar VS 900 and the TriStar VS 950 are built to run alongside Hayward automation, and both can also run standalone off their own keypad and built in timer if you have no automation at all.
If you are wiring one into an OmniLogic, OmniPL or ProLogic panel, you will need the correct communication cable between the pump and the panel. That cable is a common thing to forget on a swap, and without it the pump will run its own schedule while the panel thinks nothing is connected.
Are the replacement parts the same on both pumps?
Some are, some are not. The wet end hardware is shared across the TriStar VS line, so baskets, lids, o-rings and unions generally cross over. The motor and drive side does not.
Hayward sells the power end (motor plus drive) as an assembly, and it is sold by horsepower. The 1.85 HP version is SPX3202Z1VSPE and the 2.7 HP version is SPX3206Z1VSPE. They are not interchangeable, so check the label on your pump before ordering. The SPX3200LCD display is the shared control interface used across MaxFlo VS and TriStar VS pumps, which is handy when the screen goes dark but the pump still runs.
TriStar VS 900 vs. VS 950: the short answer
Buy the SP32900VSP TriStar VS 900 if you have a straightforward pool and no spa or water features. Buy the SP32950VSP TriStar VS 950 if you have a spa, features, a large pool, or you are replacing something big. Both are the same pump family, so you are not giving up build quality either way. You are only choosing how much flow you want available.
One last note on voltage. Check the label and your breaker before you order, since these pumps ship in different voltage configurations and you do not want to find that out on installation day.
