Hayward TriStar VS 900 vs. TriStar VS 950: Which Pump Should You Buy?

We get this question at the counter all the time. A customer needs a new variable speed pump, they've narrowed it down to the Hayward TriStar line, and now they're stuck between the TriStar VS 900 (model SP32900VSPX1) and the TriStar VS 950 (model SP32950VSPX1). The short answer: the VS 900 is plenty for most residential pools, and the VS 950 is for larger pools, spa combos, and setups with water features that need more flow.

Here's how to figure out which one fits your pool without overpaying or ending up underpowered.

What's the actual difference between the VS 900 and VS 950?

The main difference is power. The TriStar VS 900 (SP32900VSPX1) is a 1.85 HP pump, while the TriStar VS 950 (SP32950VSPX1) steps up to 2.7 HP. That extra horsepower means more flow at higher head pressure, which matters if your plumbing runs are long or your equipment pad sits far from the pool.

Voltage is different too, and this trips people up. The VS 900 model we carry runs on 230V single phase. The VS 950 is dual voltage, so it works on 115V or 230V. If you're replacing an old pump and you're not sure what voltage your pad is wired for, check before you order. Putting a pump on the wrong voltage is one of the most common reasons a new pump won't turn on out of the box.

Both pumps come with OmniX built in, so you get app control and scheduling without buying a separate automation system. Both are compatible with Hayward automation if you already have it.

Is the TriStar VS 900 enough for my pool?

For most in-ground pools up to around 25,000 or 30,000 gallons with standard plumbing, yes. The VS 900 has enough flow to turn the water over, run a suction cleaner, and handle a typical cartridge or sand filter without straining.

At low speeds it sips power, which is where variable speed pumps earn their money. Most of the day your pump should be loafing along at low RPM anyway. You only need the high end of the curve for priming, vacuuming, or backwashing.

If your old single speed pump was 1.5 HP or less and it kept up fine, the VS 900 is almost certainly the right pick. Buying more pump than you need just costs you more up front for capacity you'll rarely use.

When do you actually need the TriStar VS 950?

You want the VS 950 when your pool asks more of the pump. That usually means one of these situations:

• A large pool, roughly 30,000 gallons and up
• A pool and spa combo where the pump has to drive spa jets
• Water features like sheer descents, deck jets, or a waterfall
• Long plumbing runs or an equipment pad well above or far from the pool
• An in-floor cleaning system, which needs serious pressure to work right

In those cases the 2.7 HP motor on the SP32950VSPX1 gives you headroom the VS 900 doesn't have. A pump running flat out at max RPM all day is loud, wears faster, and burns more electricity. It's better to have a bigger pump running at 60 percent than a smaller one pinned at 100.

What about price?

The TriStar VS 900 runs $1,660 and the TriStar VS 950 runs $2,100, so the gap is about $440. That's real money, but it's small compared to the cost of pulling out an undersized pump a year from now. Size the pump to the pool, not to the price tag.

One more note on running costs. Both pumps are ENERGY STAR certified variable speed models, and depending on where you live, your utility may offer a rebate for either one. Worth a quick check before you buy.

Bottom line: SP32900VSPX1 or SP32950VSPX1?

Pick the TriStar VS 900 (SP32900VSPX1) if you have a standard residential pool, no spa, no big water features, and 230V power at the pad. Pick the TriStar VS 950 (SP32950VSPX1) if you have a big pool, a spa combo, water features, or you need the flexibility of dual voltage.
