Hayward SP0714T Vari-Flo Multiport Valve Leaking? Causes and Fixes
The multiport valve on top of a sand filter gets worked hard. Every backwash, every rinse, every winterization means turning that handle, and the Hayward SP0714T Vari-Flo is no exception. Sooner or later most of them start to leak somewhere.
The good news is that a leaking SP0714T is usually a cheap fix, and sometimes the smarter move is just swapping the whole valve. This guide walks through where the water is coming from, what that tells you, and how to fix it.
Why is my Hayward multiport valve leaking?
Nine times out of ten, a leaking Vari-Flo valve has a worn or warped spider gasket. That's the star-shaped rubber gasket inside the valve that seals off each port as you turn the handle.
When the spider gasket flattens, tears, or pops out of its groove, water sneaks between ports. You'll see it as a drip from the backwash line, weak returns, or sand blowing back into the pool. Less often, the leak comes from the cover o-ring, a loose handle assembly, or a crack in the valve body itself. Each one shows up a little differently, so where the water appears matters.
Water coming out of the backwash line while filtering?
Water trickling out of the backwash port while the valve is set to Filter means the internal seal isn't holding. That's the classic spider gasket failure on the SP0714T.
People sometimes blame the pump or think the filter is overfull. It's neither. The gasket is supposed to block the waste port completely in Filter mode, and once it wears down, a portion of your pool water goes straight down the drain every hour the pump runs. That leak costs you water, chemicals, and heat, so it's worth fixing quickly.
How to fix a leaking SP0714T: replacing the spider gasket
Replacing the spider gasket fixes most internal leaks. Here's the basic process:
- Shut off the pump and relieve pressure at the filter's air relief valve.
- Remove the screws around the valve cover and lift the cover and handle assembly out as one piece.
- Pull the old spider gasket out of its groove in the valve body. Note how it sits before you remove it.
- Clean the groove thoroughly. Any sand or debris left behind will keep the new gasket from seating.
- Press the new gasket in evenly, without glue unless the groove is damaged.
- Reinstall the cover, tighten the screws in a crisscross pattern, and test each valve position.
One warning: if the old gasket came loose and got chewed up by the rotor, check the sealing surfaces for gouges. A scratched valve body won't seal well even with a fresh gasket.
Leaking around the handle or cover
Water seeping from under the handle or around the cover edge points to the cover o-ring or the handle shaft seal, not the spider gasket. These parts dry out and crack with sun exposure and age.
The fix is the same idea: open the cover, replace the worn o-ring, lubricate it with a silicone-based pool lube, and reassemble. Never use petroleum grease on these seals. It swells the rubber and makes things worse.
Should you repair the gasket or replace the whole SP0714T valve?
If the valve body is cracked, the sealing surfaces are gouged, or the valve is more than eight to ten years old with multiple leaks, replace the whole valve. A new Hayward SP0714T costs far less than the water and chemicals a chronic leak wastes over a season.
Repair makes sense when the body is sound and the leak traces back to one worn part. But if you've already replaced the spider gasket once and it's leaking again, or the handle feels crunchy and stiff in every position, the internal components are worn as a set. Swapping the complete valve takes maybe half an hour on a threaded top mount filter and gives you fresh seals everywhere at once.
One habit that makes your new valve last
Never turn the handle while the pump is running. Moving the valve under pressure grinds the spider gasket against the rotor and is the single biggest cause of early gasket failure. Shut the pump off first, every time, and a new SP0714T should give you years of trouble-free service.
