Hayward ProLogic Display Blank or Frozen? How to Tell If the Main Board Is Bad (GLX-PCB-PRO)
A blank screen on a Hayward ProLogic is one of the calls we get most in the middle of pool season. The panel worked fine yesterday, and today the display is dead, frozen, or showing garbage characters. In a lot of these cases the fix ends up being the main circuit board, part number GLX-PCB-PRO. But not always, so it pays to check a few things before you order one.

What does the GLX-PCB-PRO main board actually do?
The GLX-PCB-PRO is the brain of Hayward ProLogic and AquaPlus automation systems. It runs the display, reads your sensors, fires the relays for your pump and lights, and controls salt chlorination.
Because everything routes through this one board, a failure can show up in a bunch of different ways. Some boards die all at once. Others fail one function at a time, which is what makes diagnosis confusing.
Why is my ProLogic display blank or not working?
A blank display usually comes down to one of three things: no power reaching the unit, a bad display cable, or a failed main board. The board is the most common culprit on units more than a few years old.
Typical signs the main board is the problem:
- The display is completely dark even though the breaker is on and power is confirmed at the panel
- The screen shows scrambled or partial characters that don't clear after a power cycle
- Buttons stop responding, or the menu freezes on one screen
- Relays click on their own, or equipment turns on and off with no command
- The salt system stops chlorinating even though the cell tests fine
- The unit keeps tripping its fuse right after you replace it
Rule these out before you replace the GLX-PCB-PRO
Before spending money on a board, spend ten minutes checking the cheap stuff. A surprising number of "dead" ProLogic panels come back to life at this step.
- Check the breaker and confirm you actually have power at the panel. Flip it fully off, then back on.
- Look at the fuses on the board itself. A blown fuse is a couple of dollars. Just know that if a new fuse blows again right away, that points back to the board.
- Inspect the ribbon cable and wiring connections. Corrosion or a loose connector can kill the display while the board is still fine.
- Look for visible damage on the board: burn marks, swollen capacitors, or corrosion around the terminals. Any of those and the board needs to go.
- Think about recent storms. Lightning and power surges are the number one killer of these boards. If your panel died right after a storm, the board is the prime suspect.
Is the GLX-PCB-PRO compatible with my system?
The GLX-PCB-PRO fits Hayward ProLogic and AquaPlus systems. It is not the right board for a standard AquaRite salt system, which uses the GLX-PCB-RITE instead. Mixing those two up is a common ordering mistake, so double check which system you have before you buy.

Repair vs. replace: what does a new board cost?

The swap itself is manageable for a comfortable DIYer. Kill power at the breaker, photograph every wire before you disconnect anything, move the connections over one at a time, and take your time. After the swap you'll need to re-enter your settings, so note your current pump schedules and chlorinator percentage before you start.
One more tip: put a surge protector on the circuit feeding your pool panel. It's cheap insurance for the new board, especially if a surge is what took out the old one.
