What does the Hayward HL-CHEM actually do?

The HL-CHEM continuously measures two things: pH and ORP. ORP (oxidation reduction potential) is a live reading of how well your sanitizer is actually working, which is more useful than just knowing how much chlorine is in the water. Based on those readings, your OmniLogic system adjusts chlorine output or triggers chemical dispensing to keep the water in range.

In practice, that means the system reacts to a pool party or a heat wave before you'd ever catch it with a test strip. Instead of chasing readings after the water has already drifted, the equipment corrects small swings as they happen. Your job shrinks down to checking the app now and then and keeping an eye on probe health.

What is the HL-CHEM compatible with?

The HL-CHEM is an accessory for Hayward OmniLogic automation. It is not a standalone controller, so if you don't have a compatible Omni system on the pad, this kit has nothing to plug into. On the sanitizer side, it pairs naturally with Hayward salt chlorination, where the system raises or lowers cell output based on the ORP reading. It can also manage dispensing for pools that don't run salt. Either way, the automation system is the brain and the HL-CHEM is the set of eyes.

How to set up the HL-CHEM kit

Setup is a plumbing job plus a configuration job. Most handy pool owners can do it in an afternoon, though plenty of people hand it to their pool pro. The short version:

  • Shut off the pump and relieve pressure at the filter before cutting into anything.
  • Install the flow cell and sensors in the return line after the filter (and after the heater), following the placement in the manual. Probe location matters for accurate readings.
  • Run the sensor wiring back to the OmniLogic and connect it per the instructions. Keep sensor cables away from high-voltage lines to avoid interference.
  • Restart the pump, check for drips, and let water flow through the cell.
  • Enable Sense and Dispense in the OmniLogic configuration, then set your target pH and ORP ranges.
  • Give the probes time to stabilize in the water, then compare readings against a fresh manual test and calibrate as needed.

That last step is the one people skip. New probes need a little time in the water before they settle down. Calibrating against a good test kit on day one, then again a week later, gets you trustworthy numbers.

HL-CHEM readings not matching your test kit?

Nine times out of ten this comes down to calibration or probe condition, not a broken kit. If the pH or ORP reading looks off, recalibrate against a fresh reagent test first (strips are too loose for this job). Also check that water is actually flowing through the cell and that the probe tips are clean.

Keep in mind that probes are wear items. They live in treated water full time, and their accuracy fades over a few seasons. If your HL-CHEM drifted slowly over a year or two and calibration won't bring it back, a replacement probe usually fixes it. Wild, jumpy readings right after install point to an air pocket in the flow cell or electrical interference on the sensor cable instead.

Is the HL-CHEM worth the money?

For a pool that gets steady use, yes, the math tends to work out. Automatic chemistry control means fewer surprise algae blooms, less overshooting with acid, and a sanitizer level that stays where it should. Over a season, wasted chemicals and a single green-pool recovery can eat a real chunk of the kit's price.

It makes the most sense for busy households, rental or vacation properties where nobody is testing daily, and pool-spa combos where water balance shifts quickly. If you already own an OmniLogic, the HL-CHEM is the piece that turns it into a true set-and-forget system. If your pool is lightly used and you enjoy hand testing, you can live without it.
