- Confirm every shutoff valve between the tank and the heater is fully open.
- On propane, check the tank level. Below about 20 percent, pressure can sag enough to cause ignition trouble.
- If other propane appliances on the same supply are also struggling, the problem is supply, not the heater.
- With a multimeter, check for 24 volts at the valve terminals during an ignition attempt.
- If the valve gets 24 volts but never opens, the valve itself is the likely failure.
- If there's no voltage at the valve, look upstream instead. The control board or a safety switch (pressure switch, high limit) is interrupting the circuit.
One honest caution here. If you're not comfortable working around gas and live voltage, hand this diagnosis to a pool heater tech. The part is easy to buy, but gas work is not the place to guess.
Is it the gas valve or the control board?
The voltage test settles it. Power arriving at the valve with no gas flow means a bad valve. No power arriving means the valve never got the command, so the board or a safety in the chain is the real problem.
