A puddle under a pool heater makes everyone nervous, and honestly it should. Sometimes it's nothing. Sometimes it means the heat exchanger inside your Hayward Universal H-Series heater has failed, and that's the most expensive part in the whole cabinet.

This guide walks through how to tell the difference, what kills heat exchangers in the first place, and when it makes sense to install a replacement like the Hayward FDXLHXA1400 heat exchanger assembly instead of paying for an entirely new heater.

What does the heat exchanger actually do?

The heat exchanger is the tube bundle that sits above the burners and carries your pool water through the flame's heat. Water goes in cool, picks up heat as it passes through the tubes, and comes out warm.

Because it holds pressurized water directly over an open flame, it takes more abuse than any other part in the heater. When it springs a leak, water ends up where it should never be: on the burners, on the controls, and on the ground under the unit.

Why is my Hayward heater leaking water?

Not every leak means a bad heat exchanger. Before you assume the worst, rule out the cheap and normal causes first.

  • Condensation. A heater warming up cold spring water will sweat, and that condensation can drip out the bottom. It looks alarming and it's completely normal. It stops once the water warms up.
