Hayward ColorLogic Pool Light Not Turning On or Stuck on One Color? How to Fix It (LPCUS22100)
A dead pool light feels like an expensive problem. Most of the time it isn't. When customers call us about a Hayward ColorLogic light that won't turn on, the fault is usually somewhere in the power path, not inside the fixture itself.
Below is the order we'd check things in before anyone pulls an LPCUS22100 out of the niche. Work through it top to bottom and you'll know pretty quickly whether you're buying a $20 part or a new light.
Why is my Hayward ColorLogic light not turning on?
Nine times out of ten it's power, not the light. Check the breaker, the GFCI outlet, and the transformer output before you touch anything in the water.
Common causes, roughly in the order we see them:
- Tripped GFCI or breaker. Reset it once. If it trips again right away, stop and get an electrician, because that usually means water got somewhere it shouldn't be.
- No output from the low voltage transformer. A 12V light like the LPCUS22100 needs a working transformer. Put a meter on the secondary side and see if you're actually getting voltage.
- The automation relay never fired. If the light is on a Hayward OmniLogic, ProLogic, or a simple timer, the schedule or relay may be the thing that's off, not the bulb.
- Loose or corroded wire in the junction box. Backyard junction boxes take a beating. Pop the cover and look for green corrosion or a wire nut that's backed off.
- Water in the junction box. If there's standing water in there, fix that first. It will kill whatever you put in next.
Why is my ColorLogic light stuck on one color?
Color selection on these lights works by counting power interruptions. If the switch timing is off, the light never advances to the next show and just sits on whatever it landed on.
Flip the light switch off and back on with about a one second gap to step forward. Too slow and the light resets to its startup color. Too fast and it may not register the interruption at all. It takes a little rhythm and most people get it on the second or third try.
If you have two or more lights on the same circuit and they're showing different colors, they've fallen out of sync. Cut power for a full minute, then restore it. They should all come back on the same default and step together after that.
How do you reset a Hayward ColorLogic light?
Turn power off at the switch or breaker for at least 30 seconds, then turn it back on. The light returns to its default startup color and the color sequence starts over.
That's the whole reset. There's no hidden button or menu. If a reset doesn't bring the light back at all, you're back to checking power and wiring rather than the fixture.
Light comes on but looks dim, foggy, or half lit
Cloudy or partially lit usually means water intrusion or a failing LED cluster. Neither one gets better on its own.
Pull the fixture out of the niche (with the power off) and look at the lens. Condensation inside the sealed housing means the seal has failed and water is sitting against the electronics. A section that stays dark while the rest lights up points to LEDs that have given up. Either way the fixture is done, since these are sealed units and aren't meant to be opened up and rebuilt.
Repair or replace the LPCUS22100?
Replace the parts around the light first. Replace the light only when the fixture itself is clearly the problem.
Worth replacing on their own: the junction box, the wire nuts and connectors, the transformer, the trim ring, and the niche gasket. Those are cheap and they fail more often than the light does.
Time for a new fixture when you see water inside the sealed lens, physical damage to the cord jacket, dark LED sections, or the light draws power but never illuminates with confirmed good voltage at the leads. A cut or nicked cord is also a replacement, not a splice job. Underwater splices on a 12V light are a bad idea no matter how good the tape is.
Check cord length and voltage before you order
Measure from the niche to your junction box, then add slack. The cord has to reach with enough left over to lift the fixture out onto the deck for service later. That's usually a few extra feet people forget about.
The LPCUS22100 is the 100 ft cord version and runs on 12V, so it needs a transformer. If your run is longer, there's a 150 ft version of the same light. Ordering a cord that's too short is the most common return we deal with on pool lights, so measure twice.
