Hayward AquaRite Not Working? How to Tell If the Main Board Is Bad (GLX-PCB-RITE)
The Hayward AquaRite has been hanging on pool walls for a couple of decades now, and most of them just quietly do their job. But when one stops making chlorine, or the display goes dark, or the readings start jumping around, the main circuit board is a common suspect. That board is the Hayward GLX-PCB-RITE, and it runs the whole show inside the control box.
Before you spend money on a new board, it pays to rule out the cheaper causes. Plenty of "dead" AquaRites turn out to have a dirty cell or a blown fuse. This guide walks through how to tell the difference.
What does the GLX-PCB-RITE main board actually do?
The GLX-PCB-RITE is the brain of the AquaRite. It reads salt level and water temperature, controls the power going to the salt cell, runs the display, and flips the cell polarity on a schedule to keep scale from building up.
Because it touches everything, a failing board can show up in a lot of different ways. That's why it gets blamed so often, sometimes fairly, sometimes not.
Signs your AquaRite main board is bad
The clearest signs of a bad board are a blank display with confirmed power, no voltage reaching a known-good cell, or readings that make no sense. Here's the longer list:
- The display is blank or scrambled even though the unit has power at the input terminals.
- The salt reading is stuck, wildly wrong, or bounces around while your test strips say the water is fine.
- The unit shows it's generating but a known-good cell produces nothing, and you've already cleaned it.
- You can smell burnt electronics, or you can see scorched spots or bulging components on the board itself.
- The unit trips its fuse repeatedly right after you replace it.
Any one of these on its own isn't proof. Two or three together, after you've ruled out the basics below, usually means the board is done.
Check these cheaper things first
Most AquaRite "not working" calls we get are not board failures. Run through this list before ordering a GLX-PCB-RITE:
- Power and breaker. Confirm the breaker isn't tripped and the unit is actually getting the right voltage. Kill the power first if you're opening the box.
- The fuse on the board. There's a small fuse on the board itself. If it's blown, a replacement fuse costs a few dollars. If the new one blows right away, that points back at the board or the cell.
- Salt level. Low salt makes the unit cut output or shut down. Test the water yourself instead of trusting the display, since a bad board can misread salt.
- The cell. A scaled-up or worn-out cell mimics board failure. Pull it, look for white crusty buildup on the plates, and clean it if needed. Cells are wear items and typically last 3 to 5 seasons.
- Cold water. Below roughly 60 degrees, the system cuts chlorine production on purpose. That's normal, not a fault.
How to replace the AquaRite main board
Swapping the GLX-PCB-RITE is a job most handy pool owners can do in under an hour. The board comes as a complete assembly, so it's mostly unplugging and re-plugging connectors.
- Shut off power to the AquaRite at the breaker. Verify it's dead before touching anything.
- Open the front panel and take a photo of the wiring so you have a reference.
- Unplug the connectors and remove the screws holding the old board.
- Mount the new board, reconnect everything to match your photo, and close it up.
- Restore power, set your salt level and percentage, and confirm the unit shows generating.

Repair vs. replace: is a new board worth it?
If the control box and cell are otherwise healthy, replacing the board is almost always the better deal. A GLX-PCB-RITE costs a fraction of what a complete new salt system runs, and the rest of the AquaRite (the transformer, the enclosure, the flow switch) tends to hold up well.
The math changes if your cell is also near the end of its life. A new board plus a new cell starts to approach the cost of a newer system with a fresh warranty. In that case, weigh the age of the whole setup before deciding.
