EasyTouch 4 vs. EasyTouch 8: Which Pool Automation System Do You Need?

Pentair 520545 EasyTouch 8 pool and spa automation system with IntelliChlor IC40 salt cell

Pentair sells the EasyTouch in two main sizes, and the names tell you most of the story. The EasyTouch 4 controls up to four auxiliary circuits. The EasyTouch 8 controls up to eight. That one number decides which system belongs on your equipment pad.

We walk customers through the EasyTouch 4 vs. EasyTouch 8 question all the time, and it always comes down to two things. What equipment do you have right now, and what do you think you'll add later? Answer those and the choice almost makes itself.

What's the real difference between EasyTouch 4 and EasyTouch 8?

The difference is circuit count, not features. Both systems schedule your pump, run your heater, manage pool and spa modes, and work with the same ScreenLogic app control. The EasyTouch 8 simply has more relays, so it can switch more pieces of equipment on and off.

Think of each circuit as one switch. Your filter pump takes one. A pool light takes one. A waterfall pump, a booster pump for a pressure cleaner, landscape lighting, a bubbler in the tanning ledge, each of those needs its own circuit. Once you run out, that's it. The system can't control anything else.

How many circuits do you actually need?

Count every piece of equipment you want the system to control, then leave yourself at least one spare. Here's a quick way to add it up:

  • Filter pump (everyone has this one)
  • Pool light, and a separate spa light if you have one
  • Water features: waterfall, deck jets, bubblers
  • Booster pump for a pressure-side cleaner
  • Landscape or patio lighting you want on a schedule
  • Anything you're planning to add in the next few years

If that list comes to three or fewer, an EasyTouch 4 covers you with room to spare. If you're at four or more, or even close to it, go straight to the EasyTouch 8. A maxed-out panel on day one is the most common regret we hear about.

Who should buy the EasyTouch 4? (Models 520543 and 520593)

The EasyTouch 4 is the right call for a standard pool or pool and spa setup with basic equipment. If your pad has a pump, a heater, and a light or two, four circuits is plenty and there's no reason to pay for capacity you'll never touch.

The model 520543 is the EasyTouch 4SC-IC40, built for pool and spa combos, and it comes with the IntelliChlor IC40 salt cell included. If you want a single body version, the model 520593 (EasyTouch 4PSC-IC40) packages the controls and salt system together and usually costs a few hundred dollars less. Both are compatible with ScreenLogic, so phone control is an easy add.

Who should buy the EasyTouch 8? (Model 520545)

Get the EasyTouch 8 if your pool has water features, multiple lights, a cleaner booster pump, or if you just aren't sure what you'll want in five years. The extra circuits cost a little more up front and save you a major headache down the road.

The model 520545 bundle is the version we recommend most. It includes the IntelliChlor IC40 salt cell, the transformer, and two valve actuators for pool and spa switching, so you're not piecing the system together part by part. For big pools there's also the 521150, which steps up to the larger IC60 cell.

Can you upgrade an EasyTouch 4 to an EasyTouch 8 later?

Not with a simple plug-in expansion. Moving from four circuits to eight means replacing the guts of the system, which costs far more than the price gap between the two panels today. That's why we push people who are on the fence toward the EasyTouch 8. Buying the bigger panel once is cheaper than buying the small one twice.

The bottom line on EasyTouch 4 vs. EasyTouch 8

Simple pad, no plans to expand: the EasyTouch 4 (520543 or 520593) does the job and saves you money. Water features, extra lighting, or any chance you'll add equipment: the EasyTouch 8 (520545) is worth every dollar of the difference. Either way you get the same reliable Pentair automation, the same app control, and a salt cell in the box.
