48Y vs. 56Y Pool Pump Motor Frames: What's the Difference? (Century H-SQ1102 vs B2748)
Your pump motor died, you went looking for a replacement, and now you are staring at two numbers that mean nothing to you: 48Y and 56Y. They come up on almost every pool pump motor listing, including the Century H-SQ1102 and the Century B2748, and picking the wrong one is one of the most common ordering mistakes we see.
Here is the short version, plus how to check what you actually have before you buy.
What does the frame size on a pool pump motor mean?
The frame size describes the motor's physical size and how it mounts, not how much power it makes. A 1 HP motor can be 48Y or 56Y, and those two are not always interchangeable.
The numbers come from NEMA motor standards. A 56 frame motor is physically bigger around and sits a little taller than a 48 frame motor. The "Y" on the end tells you it is a pool and spa motor, which means a threaded shaft and mounting hardware built for wet ends like the ones on Hayward, Pentair, and Sta-Rite pumps.
What is a 48Y frame motor?
A 48Y is the smaller of the two. It has a narrower body shell and a lower shaft center height, so it sits closer to the pump base.
You see 48Y frames on a lot of older and mid-size residential pumps, especially square flange models. The Century H-SQ1102 is a good example: 1 HP, 3450 RPM, 115/230V, 48Y frame, square flange. If your old motor is a square flange 48Y and you drop in a 56Y, the bolt pattern on the flange will not line up.
What is a 56Y frame motor?
A 56Y is the larger frame. Bigger shell, taller shaft center, and usually a heavier motor overall.
Most full size residential and light commercial pumps in the 1.5 HP to 3 HP range use a 56Y. The Century B2748 is a 2 HP, 230V, 56Y frame motor built for pumps that move a lot of water and run long hours. If your pump came from the factory with a 56Y, that is what it needs to keep.
Can I put a 56Y motor on a pump that came with a 48Y?
Usually no, not without also changing parts of the wet end. The mounting bolt pattern, the shaft height, and the seal plate opening are all sized around the frame.
Some pump models are built to accept either frame with a different seal plate, but plenty are not. Swapping frames without checking is how people end up with a motor that will not bolt up, or one that bolts up but leaks because the shaft seal is not seated right. If you are not sure your pump is compatible with the other frame, call before you order.
How do I find out which frame my motor is?
- Read the nameplate on the side of the motor. Most list the frame right on the label, like 48Y or 56Y.
- If the label is faded or gone, measure the diameter of the motor body. A 48 frame is noticeably narrower than a 56 frame.
- Look at how it attaches. Square flange, C-flange, and thru-bolt mounts all bolt on differently, and that matters as much as the frame number.
- Take photos of the motor label and the mounting end before you take anything apart. It saves a lot of guessing later.
Does the frame change the horsepower I need?
No. Frame and horsepower are separate specs. What you want is a motor that matches the horsepower and service factor your pump was designed around, in the frame your pump accepts.
Going up in horsepower on the same wet end does not automatically give you more flow. Your plumbing size and filter set the ceiling. Oversizing usually just costs more to run and can push your filter past what it likes.
Motor not working: is it worth replacing?
If the pump hums but the shaft will not spin, keeps tripping the breaker, or the motor won't turn on at all, a replacement motor is often cheaper than a whole new pump, especially if the wet end is still in good shape.
A few things to weigh:
- Replacement cost on a single speed motor like the H-SQ1102 or B2748 is a fraction of a new variable speed pump.
- Always replace the shaft seal at the same time. It is cheap and it is the part that fails next.
- Check local rules. Some areas now require variable speed on new pump installs, though motor replacements on existing pumps are usually still fine.
Picking between the H-SQ1102 and the B2748
Match the frame first, then the horsepower and voltage. Go with the H-SQ1102 if your pump takes a 48Y square flange motor at 1 HP on 115 or 230V. Go with the B2748 if your pump takes a 56Y frame and you need 2 HP at 230V.
Write down the frame, the flange type, the horsepower, the service factor, and the voltage off your old nameplate before ordering either one. Those five numbers are all it takes to get this right the first time.
