Pentair IntelliFlo3 011075 vs. 011076: What Does the I/O Board Actually Get You?

Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF 3HP variable speed pool pump, models 011075 and 011076

We get this question at the counter all the time. A customer wants the 3HP Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF, then sees two model numbers (011075 and 011076) with about a $180 gap between them, and asks what the extra money buys.

Short version: it's the same pump. The 011076 just ships with Pentair's I/O board installed, and the 011075 doesn't. Whether that board is worth it depends entirely on what else sits on your equipment pad.

Are the 011075 and 011076 the same pump?

Yes. Both the 011075 and the 011076 are the Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF, 3 horsepower, variable speed and flow. Same wet end, same motor, same drive, same footprint on the pad.

If you swapped the two pumps side by side and never opened the drive cover, you couldn't tell them apart. Plumbing, wiring, and mounting are identical, so one is not easier to install than the other.

What does the I/O board on the 011076 actually do?

The I/O board lets the pump act as a small control hub for other equipment instead of just running itself. It adds relay outputs and inputs to the drive, so the pump can switch things on and off, or react to an outside signal.

In practice, that means things like:

  • Turning on a salt chlorinator or booster pump only when the IntelliFlo3 011076 is actually moving water
  • Switching a pool light or another small load on a schedule through the pump instead of a separate timer
  • Accepting an input from external equipment so the pump responds to it automatically

For a pool with no automation system, that's a real upgrade. The pump becomes the brain of the pad without the cost of a full control panel.

Does the 011075 have WiFi, or is that only on the 011076?

Both models have wireless connectivity built into the drive, so both work with the Pentair Home app on your phone. You can set schedules, adjust speeds, and check status on either pump.

This trips people up because some listings only say WiFi on one of them. The app control is not what you're paying extra for. The relay and input connections on the I/O board are the difference between the two model numbers.

Which model should you buy?

Buy the 011075 if the pump only needs to run itself, or if you already have an automation system like IntelliCenter or EasyTouch doing the thinking. The automation panel already controls your other equipment, so a second set of relays inside the pump would just sit there unused.

Buy the 011076 if you have no automation system and you want the pump to manage a chlorinator, a light, or other gear on the pad. Compared to the price of a full automation package, roughly $180 for the I/O board is the cheap way to get basic control.

One more thing worth knowing. If you buy the 011075 now and change your mind later, Pentair sells the I/O board as an add-on part, so you're not locked out. But if you already know you'll use it, it's simpler and usually cheaper to buy the 011076 with the board factory installed.

Is the IntelliFlo3 011075 or 011076 compatible with my setup?

Both versions of the IntelliFlo3 VSF are compatible with standard 230V pool wiring and work as straight replacements for older IntelliFlo pumps in most installs. If you're replacing a single speed pump, either model will cut your energy use dramatically, which is the main reason to move to a variable speed pump in the first place.

If you're not sure whether your salt cell or cleaner pump can be wired through the I/O board, send us the model numbers before you order. It's a five minute check that saves a return.

Bottom line on the 011075 vs. 011076

Same great pump either way. No automation and nothing else to control? Save the money and get the 011075. No automation but other equipment on the pad you'd like the pump to run? Spend the extra on the 011076 and let the I/O board earn its keep.
