IntelliFlo VS+SVRS vs. IntelliFlo3: Which Pentair Pump Should You Buy?

Pentair IntelliFlo3 VSF variable speed pool pump

Customers ask us this one almost every week. Both pumps say Pentair on the side, both are variable speed, and both cost real money. So which one goes on your pad?

Short version: the IntelliFlo3 is the newer pump and the right pick for most pools. The IntelliFlo VS+SVRS (model 011057) is the one you buy when your pool has a suction entrapment risk that the pump itself needs to handle.

What is the actual difference between the IntelliFlo VS+SVRS and the IntelliFlo3?

The big difference is safety hardware. The VS+SVRS has a built-in Safety Vacuum Release System. If something blocks the suction line, the pump senses the change and shuts itself down. The IntelliFlo3 does not have that feature built in.

Everything else is generational. The IntelliFlo3 is the newer platform with a cleaner interface, app and WiFi control, and true flow control instead of speed settings alone. The VS+SVRS (011057) is an older design that Pentair kept in the lineup because of what it does for safety.

Do you need a pump with SVRS?

You need SVRS protection if your pool has a single main drain with no split suction, or if your local code requires it. Many areas require some form of entrapment protection on pools like that, and a VS+SVRS pump is one accepted way to cover it.

  • Single unblockable main drain or two drains spaced correctly: an IntelliFlo3 is usually fine.
  • Single blockable drain, no safety vacuum release on the plumbing: the IntelliFlo VS+SVRS is the simple answer.
  • Spas and small bodies of water with strong suction: worth asking your local inspector before you buy.

Do not guess on this one. A quick call to your county or city pool inspector takes five minutes and settles it.

Why most people end up with the IntelliFlo3

Cost is the first reason. The IntelliFlo3 VSF 3.0 HP runs well under the 011057, and the 1.5 HP IntelliFlo3 is cheaper still. For a standard residential pool, that gap buys you a lot of chlorine.

The second reason is control. The IntelliFlo3 holds a flow rate instead of just a motor speed, so it works around a dirty filter or a partly clogged skimmer basket on its own. You also get phone control, which the VS+SVRS never had.

Third, it is the current model. Parts availability on a current pump is always better five years out than parts for a pump that is winding down.

Is the IntelliFlo VS+SVRS still worth buying?

Yes, in the right situation. If your pool needs SVRS, the 011057 does the job in one box with no extra controller, no extra sensor, and no extra wiring. That simplicity is worth the higher price.

It is also a solid pump on its own. Three total horsepower, 230V, and the same permanent magnet motor design that made the IntelliFlo line popular in the first place. It is not a downgrade, it is a different job.

Are they compatible with the same plumbing?

Mostly, yes. Both use standard union connections and both sit on a common pump pad footprint, so a swap either direction is usually straightforward. The thing to check is voltage and space.

  • The 011057 is 230V only. If your pad is wired 115V, you need an electrician first.
  • The IntelliFlo3 1.5 HP can run on 115V or 230V, which makes it easier on older pads.
  • Measure your suction and discharge pipe height before ordering. Old pumps and new pumps do not always line up perfectly.

What about repair cost down the road?

Drives are the expensive part on any of these pumps. A VS+SVRS drive replacement is its own specific part and costs more than a standard IntelliFlo drive, partly because of the safety electronics inside it. IntelliFlo3 service parts tend to be easier to source and easier on the wallet.

If you already own a VS+SVRS and it is not working, a drive swap is often cheaper than a new pump. If the wet end is cracked or the motor is toast too, a new pump usually wins.

So which Pentair pump should you buy?

Buy the IntelliFlo3 if your pool has code compliant drains and you want the best mix of price, efficiency, and control. Buy the IntelliFlo VS+SVRS 011057 if your pool needs built-in entrapment protection, or your inspector tells you it does.

That is really the whole decision. Everything else about these two pumps is close enough that it will not change how your water looks.
