Pool Pump Leaking or Losing Suction? When a Wet End Kit Beats a New Pump (AppaeTech 777009)

AppaeTech 777009 complete wet end replacement kit for Pentair WhisperFlo and IntelliFlo pool pumps

Pool pumps rarely quit all at once. The motor still spins, but the pump pushes less water, drips onto the equipment pad, and starts making a noise it never used to make. That is the water side of the pump wearing out, not the motor. A kit like the AppaeTech 777009 rebuilds that half of the pump for a fraction of what a whole new pump costs.

What is a pool pump wet end?

The wet end is every part of the pump that touches water. That means the pump housing, strainer basket, lid, diffuser, impeller, seal plate, shaft seal, and all the o-rings and gaskets that hold the assembly together.

The motor is the dry end. When somebody says their pump is worn out, they are usually describing wet end parts. The motor is often still fine.

How do I know my wet end is bad?

Look for water where it should not be and flow that is weaker than it used to be. Those two symptoms cover most worn wet ends.

  • A steady drip or spray from the gap between the pump body and the motor
  • Weak flow at the returns even after you clean the filter and empty the basket
  • Air sitting in the strainer pot that never clears out
  • Growling or grinding that changes pitch while the pump primes
  • A hairline crack in the housing or a lid that will not hold a seal no matter how much lube you use
  • A basket that no longer sits flat because the seat is worn or warped

One or two of those on a pump that is more than five years old usually means the wet end is done, not just one gasket.

Why is my pool pump not moving water like it used to?

Most of the time it is a worn impeller, a plugged diffuser, or a shaft seal that has started letting air in. All three live inside the wet end.

Impeller vanes get thin and rounded over the years, and the tight clearance between the impeller and the diffuser opens up. Once that gap grows, water slips past instead of getting pushed forward. You lose flow even though the motor is drawing the same power. Cleaning the basket will not bring it back.

Wet end kit vs. new pump: what does it actually cost?

A wet end kit is a few hundred dollars. A new variable speed pump is usually four to six times that, before you pay anyone to plumb it in.

The 777009 kit sits at $249, and it does not require new plumbing or new wiring. You keep the motor, you keep the pipe layout, and you keep the existing electrical. If the motor still runs quietly and does not trip the breaker, replacing the wet end is the cheaper repair by a wide margin.

Which pumps does the 777009 wet end kit fit?

It is built for Pentair WhisperFlo and IntelliFlo pumps in the 0.5 HP to 2 HP range. Those two families share the same wet end architecture, which is why one kit covers both.

Before you order, read the label on your motor and confirm the horsepower. If your pump is a different Pentair line, or a Hayward, the 777009 is not the right kit. Send us the model number off the pump and we will tell you what fits.

How hard is it to install?

Most people who are comfortable with basic tools can do it in an afternoon. The job is mechanical, not electrical, as long as you leave the motor wiring alone.

  • Shut off the breaker to the pump, then close the valves on both sides
  • Drain the pump by pulling the drain plugs on the bottom of the housing
  • Break the unions and lift the old pump body off the pad
  • Separate the motor from the old wet end by removing the bolts on the seal plate
  • Move the motor onto the new wet end, setting the new shaft seal so both halves seat cleanly
  • Bolt it back together, remount, reconnect the unions, and prime the pump before you power it up

Take a photo of the old assembly before you take it apart. It saves a lot of guessing when you go to put it back.

When you should skip the rebuild and buy a new pump

If the motor is the problem, a wet end kit will not help. Bearings that scream, a housing that runs too hot to touch, or a motor that keeps tripping the breaker all point at the dry end.

Same goes for an old single speed pump. In most states you now have to replace it with a variable speed model anyway, so putting a new wet end on it only buys you a little time. But if you have a healthy WhisperFlo or IntelliFlo motor sitting on a tired wet end, the 777009 gets you back to full flow without the cost of a full swap.
