Pool Pump Leaking Between the Pump and Motor? You May Need a New Seal Plate (Pentair 400031Z)
Water dripping from the spot where your pump body meets the motor almost always means the shaft seal has failed. And if you already replaced the seal once and the leak came back, the seal plate behind it is probably the real problem. The Pentair 400031Z seal plate ships with the mechanical seal already installed, so one part takes care of both.

Why is my pool pump leaking between the pump and the motor?
The most common cause is a worn mechanical shaft seal. This little seal is the only thing keeping pool water out of the gap where the motor shaft enters the wet end of the pump.
Shaft seals wear out for a few predictable reasons:
- Age. They spin with the shaft every second the pump runs, and they simply wear down over the years.
- Running dry. Even a few minutes without water can overheat the seal faces and ruin them.
- Chemistry. High chlorine or low pH eats seals faster than most people expect.
- A damaged seal plate. If the plate that holds the seal is cracked or scored, no seal will ever sit right in it.
A drip under the middle of the pump, right at the seam between the motor and the pump housing, points at this area nearly every time. A leak at the lid or at a pipe fitting is a different problem with a much cheaper fix.
When a new shaft seal alone won't fix the leak
If the seal seat in the plate is scratched, pitted, or cracked, a brand new seal will leak too. The seal needs a smooth, flat surface to press against, and a damaged plate can't give it one.
Pull the old seal and look closely at the plate. Grooves you can feel with a fingernail, white stress marks, hairline cracks around the seal bore, or a warped face all mean the plate is done. This is exactly the situation the Pentair 400031Z is made for. Instead of fighting to press a new seal into a worn plate, you swap in a fresh plate with the seal already seated correctly at the factory.

How to replace the seal plate, step by step
Swapping a seal plate is a manageable weekend job for most pool owners. The general process looks like this:
- Kill power to the pump at the breaker. Not just the timer, the breaker.
- Close the valves on both sides of the pump, or plug the lines if you have no valves.
- Remove the bolts or clamp band holding the motor assembly to the pump housing, and pull the motor end straight back.
- Remove the diffuser, then hold the shaft still and unthread the impeller.
- Take the old seal plate off the motor and set the new 400031Z in its place.
- Reinstall the impeller and diffuser, fit a fresh housing o-ring with a light coat of silicone-based lube, and bolt everything back together.
- Open the valves, prime the pump, and run it while you watch the seam for drips.
Never let the new seal faces touch grease, and don't run the pump dry to test it. Water is what lubricates the seal.
Repair or just buy a new pump?
If the motor still runs strong and quiet, replace the seal plate. A 400031Z costs a fraction of a new pump, and the rest of your pump likely has years left in it.
Lean toward a new pump instead if the motor bearings are screaming, the housing itself is cracked, or the pump is an old single-speed unit you have been meaning to upgrade anyway. Putting a new plate on a dying motor just means doing the job twice.
Stop the leak for good
A leak between the pump and motor won't heal on its own, and the dripping water slowly destroys the motor bearings below it. Catch it early, inspect the plate, and if the seat is damaged, the Pentair 400031Z seal plate with its preinstalled mechanical seal is the clean, one-part fix.
