Polaris Pool Cleaner Not Moving? How to Tell If Your PB4-60 Booster Pump Is Bad
A pressure-side cleaner that sits still in the deep end is one of the most common calls we get. Nine times out of ten the cleaner itself is fine. The problem is upstream, in the booster pump that feeds it.
Here is how to work through it without guessing, and how to know when the PB4-60 is really done.
What does the PB4-60 booster pump actually do?
The Polaris PB4-60 is a 3/4 HP dedicated pump that takes water from your main filter line and shoots it into the cleaner at high pressure. Your filter pump alone does not make enough pressure to drive the cleaner's wheels and jets. That is the booster pump's whole job.
So if the PB4-60 is not running, or is running weak, the cleaner just sits there or crawls. No pressure means no movement.
Why is my Polaris cleaner not moving?
Start by standing next to the booster pump while the system is on. What you hear tells you most of what you need to know.
- Total silence. The pump is not getting power. Check the breaker, the timer, and the relay in your automation panel.
- Humming but not spinning. Usually a seized motor or a bad start capacitor. This is the sound people describe as the pump "buzzing" or "keeps tripping the breaker."
- Running normally but the cleaner is slow. The motor is fine. You have a flow or pressure problem: clogged wall fitting, worn cleaner parts, or a leak in the hose.
- Running loud, grinding, or screeching. Bad bearings. The pump may still push water for a while, but it is on borrowed time.
How to check the booster pump step by step
Work in this order. Each step rules something out so you do not buy a part you do not need.
- Make sure the filter pump is running first. Most PB4-60 installs are wired so the booster only runs while the main pump is on. If the main pump is off or on a low speed, the cleaner will not move.
- Check the timer or automation schedule. Booster pumps are almost always on their own clock, and those schedules drift or get wiped after a power outage.
- Clean the filter and empty the pump basket. Low flow into the booster pump starves it and can cook the seal.
- Pull the cleaner's hose off the wall fitting and feel the water coming out with the booster running. Strong, steady flow means the pump is doing its part.
- Touch the pump housing after a few minutes of run time. Very hot is a warning sign, usually low flow or a failing motor.
- Look underneath for a puddle. Water dripping between the motor and the wet end means the shaft seal is leaking, and that water gets into the motor bearings next.
Should I repair the PB4-60 or replace it?
Small stuff is worth fixing. A worn O-ring, a cracked hose kit, or a chewed-up impeller are cheap parts and an easy afternoon.
Replace the whole PB4-60 when the motor is the problem. Once bearings are gone or the motor has been soaked by a leaking seal, you are looking at a motor, a seal kit, and labor that adds up to most of the price of a new pump. A rebuilt pump on a tired old motor tends to come back in a season or two.
Age matters too. Booster pumps live outside, cycle every day, and get salt and chlorine mist on them. If yours is past eight or ten years and starting to make noise, put your money into a new PB4-60 rather than parts.
Parts people usually need along with it
If you are already at the pad with tools out, check these while you are there. They fail on the same schedule and are cheap compared to a second trip.
- The feed hose and quick disconnect at the wall. Cracks here bleed off pressure the cleaner needs.
- The cleaner's backup valve and wheel bearings. Worn parts make a healthy pump look weak.
- The union O-rings on the booster pump plumbing. They dry out and suck air, which is a common cause of a booster pump that sounds like it is running dry.
- The dedicated wall fitting screen. Debris collects there and chokes flow to the cleaner.
Will a PB4-60 work with my cleaner?
The PB4-60 is the standard 3/4 HP booster used with Polaris pressure-side cleaners, and it is what most pools with a dedicated cleaner line were built around. It is also the pump a lot of other pressure-side cleaners were sized against, so it is a safe direct replacement in most older installs.
One thing to confirm before you order: your existing wiring voltage and how the pump is switched, whether that is a mechanical time clock or a relay in an automation panel. Match that and installation is mostly unbolting the old pump and setting the new one on the same base.
The short version
If the cleaner is dead in the water, listen to the booster pump before you touch the cleaner. Silence points to power. Humming points to the motor. Normal running with a slow cleaner points to flow. And a PB4-60 that is leaking at the seal and making noise has told you what it needs.
