Pentair UltraTemp Heat Pump Not Turning On? How to Check the 472734 Control Board
A heat pump that sits there doing nothing is one of the more frustrating calls we get. The pump is running, the water is moving, and the UltraTemp just will not fire up. Sometimes it's a simple flow problem. Other times the Pentair 472734 control board has quit, and no amount of resetting the breaker is going to bring it back.
Here's how to tell the difference without guessing.
Why is my Pentair UltraTemp not turning on?
Most of the time it's one of four things: no water flow, no incoming power, a bad pressure switch, or a failed 472734 control board. Work through them in that order and you'll usually find it fast.
Heat pumps are picky about flow. If the filter is dirty or the pump is running too slow, the unit will refuse to start and it can look like a dead machine. Clean the filter and bump the pump speed up before you touch anything electrical.

- Variable speed pump set too low for the heat pump to see flow
- Tripped breaker or a loose lug at the disconnect
- Failed water pressure switch telling the board there's no flow

What does the 472734 control board actually do?
The 472734 is the brain of the unit. It reads the temperature sensors, watches the pressure switch, decides when to close the contactor, and runs the display and keypad. If it stops working, everything downstream stops with it, even though the compressor and fan may be perfectly fine.
The same board is used across compatible Pentair UltraTemp and ThermalFlo heat pumps, which is why one part number covers a lot of units. Always match it against your model and serial before ordering.
Signs the 472734 control board is bad
A dead or scrambled display with confirmed 240V power at the unit is the biggest tell. If power is present and nothing lights up, the board is the prime suspect.
- Display is blank, dim, or shows nonsense characters
- Keypad buttons do nothing, or the setpoint won't change
- Fan runs but the compressor never kicks on
- Unit shows a flow or service fault even with strong, verified flow
- Heat pump randomly shuts off and won't restart until power is cycled
- Visible burn marks, swollen capacitors, or a scorched relay on the board
That last one is worth a look. Pull the panel, kill the power first, and check the board with a flashlight. Burnt spots or a bad smell mean you've found your answer.
Check these things before you replace the board
Don't buy a 472734 until you've ruled out the cheap stuff. Boards are not the most common failure on these units, they're just the most expensive one people jump to.
- Confirm 240V at the terminal block with a meter, not just at the breaker
- Check the water pressure switch. If it's stuck open, the board will never call for heat
- Look for chewed wires. Rodents love the inside of a heat pump cabinet
- Inspect the low voltage connections for corrosion or green crust
- Make sure your automation system isn't holding the heater off through a remote command
If all of that checks out and the board still won't wake up, you have your culprit.
How to replace the 472734 control board
This is a doable job if you're comfortable around 240V equipment. If you're not, hire it out. There's no shame in that and heat pump cabinets carry stored charge.
- Shut off the breaker and the disconnect. Verify with a meter that the unit is dead.
- Remove the service panel and take clear photos of every wire on the old board.
- Label each connector as you unplug it. The photos are your backup, not your plan.
- Unscrew the standoffs and lift the old board out.
- Set the new 472734 in place, reconnect every plug exactly as photographed, and check for anything left dangling.
- Restore power, set your temperature, and let the unit run a full cycle while you watch it.
Give it a few minutes. Heat pumps have a built in delay before the compressor engages, so don't panic if it doesn't heat instantly.
Is the 472734 worth it, or should you replace the heat pump?
If the compressor, fan motor, and titanium heat exchanger are all healthy, a control board is a smart repair. You're spending a few hundred dollars instead of several thousand.
Replacement starts to look questionable when the unit is well past ten years old, the coil is corroded through, or the compressor is already showing signs of trouble. In that case you're fixing one part of a machine that's on its way out anyway. A newer UltraTemp will also run more efficiently, which matters when you're paying to heat water all season.
Other UltraTemp parts that fail
While you have the panel off, it's worth knowing what else tends to go. The water pressure switch, the contactor, and the union o-rings are all common wear items on UltraTemp and ThermalFlo units. Replacing a tired pressure switch at the same time as the 472734 board saves you a second trip out to the pad.
