Pentair SolarTouch Not Turning On Your Solar Heat? Troubleshooting Guide (Model 521592)

Solar panels on your roof only help if something tells the water when to go up there. That is the whole job of the Pentair SolarTouch 521592. When it quits doing that job, you get a hot roof, a cold pool, and no obvious clue why.

We get these calls a lot in spring when people fire the system back up. Most of the time the fix is small. Here is how to work through it in order.

What does the Pentair SolarTouch 521592 actually do?

The SolarTouch 521592 is a standalone digital solar control. It watches two temperatures, your pool water and your roof panels, and rotates a 3-way valve to push water through the panels when the roof is warm enough to add heat.

The 521592 kit ships with the control unit, a 3-way valve actuator, and the temperature sensors. It does not need a full automation panel to work. That is the main reason people buy it. You get real solar control without buying an IntelliCenter.

Why is my SolarTouch not turning on the solar heat?

Almost always it is one of three things: the roof sensor is reading wrong, the valve actuator is not rotating, or the control thinks solar would not help right now.

• Your water setpoint is already satisfied, so the 521592 has no reason to call for solar.
• The solar sensor sits in shade, came loose from its mount, or the wire got chewed.
• The valve actuator toggle got bumped, or its cams are set wrong.
• The pump is not running during the hours you expect solar to work. No flow means no solar, period.
• The control lost power and nobody noticed.

Start with the pump. If the filter pump is off, nothing else matters. Solar heating only happens while water is moving.

How do I test the SolarTouch temperature sensors?

Compare what the 521592 shows on screen to reality. Pick a clear, sunny afternoon and look at both readings.

• The roof reading should be noticeably warmer than the air on a sunny day. If it reads the same as your water, be suspicious.
• Check that the solar sensor is clamped tight to the panel plumbing and sitting in direct sun, not dangling behind a panel.
• Walk the wire run. Roof edges and attic entry points are where rodents and sun damage do their work.
• With power off, loosen and retighten the sensor leads at the terminal block. Corroded or loose terminals cause readings that drift all over.

A bad sensor is cheap. It is worth ruling out before you touch anything else.

Why won't the solar valve turn?

If the SolarTouch is calling for solar and the valve just sits there, the actuator is either unpowered, switched off, or stuck on a valve that will not move.

Kill the power and pull the actuator off the valve. Turn the valve stem by hand. If it is stiff or you have to lean on it, the valve is the problem and the actuator has just been fighting it for months. If the stem turns easy with two fingers, look at the actuator instead.

Also check the small switch on the actuator body. It gets bumped during service more often than you would think. And confirm the actuator cable is seated at the 521592 terminal.

SolarTouch display blank or frozen? Try this reset

A dead or frozen SolarTouch screen usually means a power problem, not a fried board. Shut the breaker off for a full minute, then bring it back and let the control boot.

• Confirm the breaker actually feeds the 521592 and not just the pump.
• Check the power leads at the control for loose screws or heat damage.
• If it comes back and then drops out again later, you likely have a loose connection or a failing supply, not a settings issue.

If the display stays dark with confirmed power at the terminals, the control itself is done.

Repair or replace the whole SolarTouch?

Replace the small stuff first. Sensors and actuators cost a fraction of a full control, and they fail far more often than the board does.

Go to a full 521592 replacement when the display is dead with good power at the terminals, when the relay clicks but never drives the actuator, or when the control is old enough that you have already replaced pieces of it twice. At that point you are throwing parts at a system that has aged out.

One thing worth knowing: if you already run an IntelliCenter or EasyTouch, solar control is usually built into that panel. You would add a valve actuator and sensor to the existing system instead of buying a separate SolarTouch. The 521592 is for pools without that automation.

Parts to check while you are out there

• 3-way valve diverter and its o-rings, since a leaking valve kills solar flow.
• Check valve on the solar return, which keeps panels from draining back.
• Pump strainer basket and filter pressure, because weak flow will not push water to the roof.
• Solar panel headers for splits, which show up as roof drips on sunny days.

Fix flow problems before you blame the SolarTouch 521592. A control cannot heat water it cannot move.
