You walk out to fire up the heater and the display is dark. Or the screen lights up fine, but the buttons do nothing no matter how hard you press. Both problems land on the same suspect list, and the Pentair 461105 control board with 6-button keypad sits near the top of it.
Before you order anything, it's worth a few minutes of checking. Sometimes the board is fine and something cheaper upstream is the real problem. Here's how we walk customers through it at the counter.
Why is my MasterTemp display blank?
A blank display means the board isn't getting power, or the board itself has failed. Those are really the only two options, so troubleshooting is just a process of ruling out the power side first.
Start with the simple stuff:
- Check the breaker feeding the heater. Reset it fully off, then back on.
- Make sure any external timer or automation system is actually calling for the heater to have power.
- Open the front access panel and look for loose or corroded wire connections at the board. Heaters live outside, and spiders, ants, and moisture do real damage in there.
- Check the fuses on the board. A blown fuse is a cheap fix, though you should ask why it blew in the first place.
- Confirm the transformer is putting out low voltage to the board. If the transformer is dead, the display will be dead too, and no new board will fix that.
If power is reaching the board and the display is still blank, the control board is the likely failure.
Buttons not working but the display is on? That's a keypad problem
When the screen shows numbers but the buttons won't respond, the membrane keypad has usually failed. On this heater, the keypad and board come together as one assembly, which is exactly what the Pentair 461105 replacement is.
Membrane pads wear out from sun, weather, and plain old use. You'll often see it coming. One button starts needing a harder press, then two, then none of them work. Water intrusion under the pad speeds this up a lot, which is why we tell people not to blast the front of the heater with a hose.

One more tell: if the heater keeps tripping its own safety lockouts even after you've verified water flow, gas supply, and clean filters, a failing board can be sending bad signals. That one is harder to pin down, so rule out the basic stuff first.
How to replace the Pentair 461105 control board
Replacement is a manageable job for a comfortable DIYer. The board mounts behind the front panel and connects with plug-in wiring harnesses.
- Kill power to the heater at the breaker. Not just the switch, the breaker.
- Remove the front access panel to expose the board.
- Take a photo of the wiring before you unplug anything. You'll thank yourself later.
- Unplug the harnesses, remove the mounting screws, and swap in the new board.
- Reconnect everything, match it against your photo, and restore power.

Is it worth fixing, or should you replace the heater?
