Pentair Kreepy Krauly Rebel Not Moving? Common Causes and Fixes (360486)

A Rebel that just sits in one corner of the pool is one of the more common calls we get in the shop. The good news is that a suction cleaner is a simple machine, so the list of things that can go wrong is short. Most of the time you can sort it out yourself in an afternoon.

Here is how we walk customers through it, starting with the checks that cost nothing.

Why is my Kreepy Krauly Rebel not moving?

Nine times out of ten a Rebel stops moving because it is not getting enough suction, or because something inside the head has worn out and stopped turning. Suction problems come from the pool side. Wear problems come from the cleaner itself.

Check these in order:

• Pump basket and skimmer basket full of leaves
• Dirty filter, which shows up as higher than normal pressure on the gauge
• Air leaking into the hose, usually at a cracked or loose hose cuff
• Suction valve turned down too far at the equipment pad
• Pump running at too low a speed on a variable speed pump
• Worn tires or a seized turbine inside the cleaner head

If the cleaner perks up when you close off the main drain a little, you had a flow problem, not a broken cleaner.

How to fix a Rebel that keeps stalling

Start by pulling the cleaner out and holding your hand over the throat. You should feel a strong, steady pull. Weak or fluttering suction points you back to the pump and filter.

Then run through these steps:

• Empty both baskets and clean or backwash the filter.
• Walk the hose section by section and look for cracks, splits, or a loose swivel. Air bubbles trailing out of the return jets while the cleaner runs are a giveaway.
• Make sure the hose is long enough to reach the far wall plus about a foot. Too short and the cleaner will fight itself in one area.
• If you run a variable speed pump, bump the cleaner schedule up. A lot of people set their pump too low to save power and the Rebel never gets the flow it needs.
• Flip the cleaner over and spin the wheels by hand. They should turn freely with a little resistance. Gritty, stiff, or locked wheels mean the drive train or turbine is done.

What causes a Rebel to lose suction over time?

Wear. The tires flatten, the turbine bearing gets sandy, and the internal drive kits lose their grip. It happens slowly, so most owners do not notice until the cleaner starts skipping whole sections of the floor.

Tires are the cheapest fix and the most common one. If yours are smooth or the hump is gone, replace them before you chase anything else. After that, the usual suspects are the turbine kit, the drive gear kit, and the left and right drive kits. Those are all sold separately and are worth trying if the rest of the cleaner is in good shape.

When should you replace the whole cleaner head?

If the hose and fittings are fine but the head itself is cracked, sun bleached, or you have already replaced two or three internal kits, buy the head. That is exactly what the Pentair 360486 is for. The math usually works out like this. One or two small parts is a repair. Three or more, or a cracked housing, and you are better off with the 360486 head than piecing an old cleaner back together. Is the Pentair 360486 compatible with my cleaner?

The 360486 is the replacement head for the Kreepy Krauly Rebel V2 suction side cleaner. It is not a Warrior head and it is not a pressure side part, so check your model label before you order. Many Rebel and Warrior wear parts (tires, wheel hubs, drive kits) do cross over between the two, but the head itself does not.

A few habits that keep a Rebel running

• Pull the cleaner out when you shock the pool. Heavy chlorine is hard on the rubber.
• Store it out of direct sun. UV kills the plastic faster than the water does.
• Check the hose swivels every spring and replace stiff ones.
• Clean your baskets weekly. Almost every "cleaner not working" call starts with a full basket.

Do those four things and a Rebel will usually give you years before it needs the 360486 head or any of the internal kits.
