What size pool does the IntelliChlor IC15 cover?
The IC15 is rated for pools up to 15,000 gallons. That covers most above-ground pools, plunge pools, small in-ground pools, and swim spas.
Here's the part the spec sheet doesn't spell out. That rating assumes the cell gets enough run time each day to make its full daily output. If your pump only runs a few hours, or your pool sits in full sun in a hot climate, the real-world coverage shrinks. A good rule of thumb with any salt cell is to buy more capacity than your actual water volume. A cell that loafs along at 40 or 50 percent output lasts longer and keeps up better than one that runs flat out all season.
So the honest answer looks like this: for pools around 10,000 gallons or less, the IC15 is a comfortable fit. Between 10,000 and 15,000 gallons it can work, but it will be earning its keep in the middle of summer.
Is the EC-520888 compatible with your equipment?
The IC15 uses the same connection and power center setup as the rest of the IntelliChlor line. It is not a standalone unit. It needs an IntelliChlor power center to run, so if you're starting from scratch, budget for both pieces.

One thing to check before you buy: this is a Pentair cell for Pentair systems. It won't plug into a Hayward AquaRite or another brand's controller.
IC15 vs. IC20: when should you size up?
If your pool is anywhere close to the 15,000 gallon ceiling, size up. That's the short version.
The IC20 is rated for 20,000 gallons and the IC40 for 40,000, and the price gap between the IC15 and IC20 is usually smaller than people expect. Running any salt cell at or near 100 percent output all summer wears it out faster, which eats up whatever you saved on the purchase price. Buy the IC15 because your pool is small, not because it's the cheapest number on the page.
- Pool under 10,000 gallons: the IC15 is the sensible pick.
- Pool between 10,000 and 15,000 gallons: it can work, but the IC20 gives you breathing room.
- Pool over 15,000 gallons: skip the IC15 entirely.
How long does an IC15 last, and what does replacement cost?
Most IntelliChlor cells last several seasons, commonly in the 3 to 5 year range, depending on water chemistry and how hard the cell has to work. Keeping your salt level, pH, and stabilizer in range makes a real difference, and so does cleaning scale off the cell plates when needed instead of letting it build up.
When a cell does wear out, you replace just the cell, not the whole system. The power center and wiring stay put. The IC15 replacement cost is around $999, which is the lowest entry point into the IntelliChlor line.
Signs your IC15 can't keep up
If you already own an IC15 and your water keeps going soft on you, watch for these:
- Chlorine readings stay low even with the output turned all the way up.
- The cell runs at or near 100 percent for weeks at a time.
- Water turns dull or cloudy during heat waves or heavy swim weekends.
- You find yourself shocking the pool every week just to hold the line.
