Pentair IntelliChem Says No Flow? How to Test and Replace the Flow Switch (522623Z)
A no flow alarm is one of the most common calls we get about the Pentair IntelliChem. The controller refuses to dose acid or chlorine, the display says there is no flow, and yet the pump is clearly running. Nine times out of ten the problem is the flow switch, and the fix is the Pentair 522623Z external flow switch kit.
That behavior is actually the IntelliChem doing its job. It will not dispense chemicals unless it can confirm water is moving, because dosing acid into a dead pipe is dangerous. So when the flow switch fails, the whole system shuts down dosing even though everything else is fine.
Why does my IntelliChem say no flow when the pump is running?
The short answer: the IntelliChem is not getting a closed signal from its flow switch, so it assumes water is not moving. That can happen even with the pump running full speed.
Here are the usual causes, roughly in order of how often we see them:
- A failed or sticking flow switch. The paddle inside wears out, sticks, or the reed switch stops closing. This is the top cause by far.
- A damaged or corroded cable. The 3 ft cable runs outdoors and connections corrode over time.
- Low flow at the switch itself. If you run a variable speed pump at very low RPM, there may not be enough flow to push the paddle closed.
- A clogged flow cell or dirty plumbing feeding the switch. Debris can block the paddle from moving.
- A loose connection at the IntelliChem board. Worth checking before you buy anything.
How to test the IntelliChem flow switch
You can confirm a bad flow switch in about ten minutes with basic tools. The goal is to figure out whether the switch is closing when water flows past it.
- First, rule out the easy stuff. Bump your pump up to a higher speed and see if the alarm clears. If it does, your low speed setting just is not moving enough water past the switch.
- Check the cable connection at the IntelliChem. Unplug it, look for corrosion, and plug it back in firmly.
- Inspect the switch itself. Shut the pump off, close your valves, and pull the switch. Look for a stuck paddle, scale buildup, or debris.
- Test continuity. With a multimeter on the switch leads, the circuit should be open with the paddle at rest and closed when you push the paddle over. If it never closes, the switch is dead.
- If you do not have a meter, there is a simple field test. With the pump running and the alarm showing, gently tap or jumper the switch connection. If the alarm clears the moment the circuit closes, you have found your problem.
If the switch fails the continuity test, or the alarm only clears when you jumper it, replacement is the fix. These switches are not rebuildable.
Replacing it with the Pentair 522623Z kit
The Pentair 522623Z is the genuine OEM external flow switch kit for IntelliChem controllers, and it comes with a 3 ft cable. Swapping it in is a straightforward job most pool owners can handle without a service call.
- Turn off the pump and the IntelliChem, and close the valves around the flow switch tee so you are not fighting water.
- Unplug the old switch cable from the IntelliChem.
- Unscrew the old switch from its fitting. Note which way the flow arrow points before you toss it.
- Thread in the new 522623Z switch. Use a small amount of thread sealant, match the flow arrow to the direction of water flow, and hand tighten plus a gentle snug. Do not crank on it.
- Route the new cable to the IntelliChem and plug it in.
- Open the valves, start the pump, and watch the display. The no flow alarm should clear within a few seconds of the pump priming.
Direction matters here. If the flow arrow on the switch points against the water flow, the paddle will not close properly and you will chase a phantom alarm on a brand new part.
What if the 522623Z does not fix it?
If a new flow switch does not clear the alarm, the problem is upstream of the switch. At that point you are looking at the flow cell assembly, the plumbing feeding it, or in rare cases the input on the IntelliChem board itself.
Check that the flow cell and its tubing are clean and free of scale. Also confirm your pump schedule is not dropping to an RPM that starves the flow cell. If everything checks out and the alarm persists even when you jumper the switch input, the controller board needs attention, and that is a good time to call us before spending more money on parts.
For most people though, the story ends with the switch. It is a wear item, it lives a hard life in treated water, and the 522623Z is a cheap fix compared to a controller or a service visit.
