Pentair IntelliBrite 5G White vs. Color LED Pool Light: Which Should You Buy? (601000 vs 601001)

Pentair IntelliBrite 5G color LED pool light, model 601001

Pentair makes the IntelliBrite 5G in two main 120V versions. The 601000 is the white-only light, and the 601001 is the multi-color version. They look almost identical in the box, and the price gap is smaller than most people expect. So which one belongs in your pool?

Short answer: if you just want bright, clean light for night swimming, the 601000 white does the job and costs a bit less. If you want color shows, preset themes, or you're matching a light you already have, the 601001 is the one to buy. Here's the longer answer.

What's the difference between the 601000 and the 601001?

The core difference is the LED array and what it can display. The 601000 puts out white light only. The 601001 uses color-mixing LEDs that can produce fixed colors and rotating light shows.

Beyond that, they share a lot:

  • Both are 26 watt, 120V IntelliBrite 5G fixtures
  • Both fit standard Pentair large niches, so one swaps in where the other was
  • Both are sealed LED units. There is no bulb to replace, you service the light engine or replace the fixture

One practical note on cords. The 601000 we stock comes with a 30 ft cord, and the 601001 comes with a 50 ft cord. Measure the run from your niche, up over the pool deck, and all the way to the junction box before you order. A cord that comes up two feet short turns a one hour job into a return.

Is the color light worth the extra money?

For most pools, yes, and the math is simple. The 601000 white runs $898 and the 601001 color is $952.99, so you're paying about $55 more for the color features. That's a small premium on a light you'll own for years.

The 601001 gives you fixed colors plus built-in light shows. You change modes by cycling the light switch, or from your automation system if you have one. If you host evening swims or just like the look of a blue or magenta pool at night, that $55 buys a lot.

The case for the white 601000 is also real, though. White light renders the water and pool finish naturally, which some owners simply prefer. It's also the safer pick for lap swimmers and anyone who finds color cycling distracting. And if the light is mostly there so kids can swim safely after dark, white does that best.

Will it work with your automation system?

Both lights work with Pentair automation, but the color features of the 601001 are where automation really pays off. Systems like EasyTouch, IntelliCenter, and IntelliConnect can select colors and shows for the 601001 right from the app or control panel, no switch cycling needed.

The 601000 white doesn't need any of that. It's on or off. If you have no automation and no plans to add it, that simplicity is a point in the white light's favor, since you'll never fuss with modes.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the Pentair 601001 color light if any of these fit you:

  • You want color or light shows, now or later
  • You already have Pentair automation, or plan to add it
  • You're replacing an existing color IntelliBrite and want to keep the same look
  • You need the longer 50 ft cord anyway

Buy the Pentair 601000 white light if these sound more like you:

  • You want simple, bright white light with zero settings to manage
  • Your junction box is within 30 ft of the niche
  • You'd rather save the $55 and put it toward chemicals or a new cleaner

One last tip. If you're replacing a light that won't turn on at all, check the breaker, the GFCI, and the junction box connections before you buy anything. A dead pool light is sometimes just a tripped GFCI, and that fix is free.

Whichever way you go, the 601000 and 601001 are both current-production IntelliBrite 5G lights, so parts support will be around for a long time. Here are both, straight from our shelf:
