IntelliFlo Pump Not Responding to Your Automation System? Check the Communication Cable (Pentair 350122)

Pentair 350122 50 ft communication cable for IntelliFlo pool pumps

Here's a call we get all the time. The pump itself is fine. It primes, it runs, no error on the pump. But the automation system acts like the pump doesn't exist. Schedules don't fire, speed changes don't take, and the panel may show the pump as not communicating.

Nine times out of ten this is not a dead pump and not a dead automation board. It's the little two-wire communication cable running between them. Pentair sells it as part 350122, a 50 foot OEM communication cable for IntelliFlo pumps, and at around fifty bucks it's one of the cheapest fixes in pool equipment.

What does the IntelliFlo communication cable actually do?

The cable carries the low-voltage data signal between your IntelliFlo pump and your automation system (EasyTouch, IntelliTouch, or IntelliCenter). It does not power the pump. The pump gets its power from its own high-voltage wiring, so a pump can run perfectly on its own schedule while the comm cable is completely dead.

That's why this failure confuses people. Everything looks healthy at the equipment pad. The break is in the conversation between the two devices, not in either device itself.

Why is my IntelliFlo not responding to automation?

The most common cause is a bad connection at one end of the communication cable, followed by damage somewhere along its run. Before you blame a board, check these in order:

  • Loose or corroded terminals. The cable lands on small screw terminals at the pump and inside the load center. Pool pads are wet, humid places. Green or white crust on the copper is enough to kill the signal.
  • Reversed wires. The two data wires have to land on the correct terminals at both ends. If someone swapped them during a repair, the devices can't talk.
  • Physical damage. Sun, trimmers, dogs, and rodents all chew up comm cables. A nick you can barely see can be the whole problem.
  • Wrong pump address. If the pump's address setting doesn't match what the automation system expects, it will ignore commands. Check this in the pump menu before replacing anything.
  • A splice that failed. Taped or wire-nutted splices out in the weather are a very common failure point. If your cable has one, be suspicious of it first.

How to fix it: a quick step-by-step

Kill power to the pump and the automation panel before touching any wiring. Then work through this list:

  • Open the load center and find where the pump's comm wires land. Confirm they're tight and clean.
  • Do the same at the pump end. Unscrew, inspect, snip back any corroded copper, and reland fresh wire.
  • Walk the cable route and look for cuts, kinks, or chew marks.
  • Confirm the wire order matches at both ends.
  • Power back up and see if the panel finds the pump.

If the connections look good and the pump still won't respond, the cable itself has likely failed internally. That's when you swap in a new Pentair 350122. Running a fresh cable takes maybe twenty minutes if the route is accessible, and it removes every splice and every questionable foot of old wire in one shot.

Is the 350122 compatible with my pump?

The Pentair 350122 is the OEM replacement communication cable for the IntelliFlo family of variable speed pumps. At 50 feet, it covers the distance between the pump and the automation panel on almost any residential pad, and you can trim it to length.

If you're not sure whether your specific pump and automation combo uses this cable, send us your pump model number and panel model and we'll confirm before you order.

When it's not the cable

If you've replaced the cable, verified the wiring order, and checked the pump address, and the pump still won't communicate, then you're likely looking at a failed comm port on either the pump drive or the automation board. At that point it's worth having the drive tested before throwing parts at it. But given that a 350122 cable costs a tiny fraction of a drive or a board, the cable is always the right thing to rule out first.
