IntelliBrite 5G Cord Length: Do You Need the 50 ft or 100 ft Model? (601001 vs 601002)
Here's a mistake we see all the time. Someone orders a new IntelliBrite 5G, waits for it to show up, pulls the old light, and then finds out the cord won't reach the junction box. Now the light has to go back and the pool sits dark for another week.
The fix is simple. Pentair sells the same 120V multi-color IntelliBrite 5G in two cord lengths. Model 601001 comes with a 50 ft cord and model 601002 comes with a 100 ft cord. The light itself is identical. Pick based on your cord run, not the price tag.
What's the difference between the Pentair 601001 and 601002?
Cord length. That's it. Both are 26 watt, 120V, multi-color LED lights with the same housing, the same color shows, and the same fit in a standard large niche. The 601001 gives you 50 feet of cord and the 601002 gives you 100 feet.
So when people ask which one is compatible with their pool, the honest answer is both. The only question that matters is whether 50 feet of cord will actually make it from your light niche to your junction box.
How do you measure what cord length you need?
Measure the full path the cord has to travel, not the straight-line distance. The cord runs from the light niche, through the conduit buried under your deck, up to the junction box where it connects to power.
Here's how to figure it out:
- If you're replacing an existing light, pull the old one and measure its cord. Buy the same length or longer.
- If you can't measure the old cord, estimate the conduit run from the niche to the junction box and add the depth of the pool wall.
- Then add slack. You need enough extra cord coiled in the niche to lift the light up onto the deck for service. Most installers leave several feet for this.
If your junction box sits close to the pool, 50 feet is usually plenty and the 601001 is the right call. If the box is across the yard, near the equipment pad, or the conduit takes a long detour, that's when the 100 ft cord on the 601002 earns its keep.
Can you splice or extend a pool light cord?
No. Don't do it. The cord on an IntelliBrite 5G is a sealed, continuous run from the light to the junction box for a reason. A splice inside the conduit or niche is a safety problem and a leak point, and it can void your warranty.
If 50 feet won't reach, the answer is not electrical tape. The answer is the 601002 with its 100 ft cord. The price difference is small compared to what a failed splice can cost you.
What if the cord is too long?
Too long is fine. Extra cord gets coiled neatly at the junction box or in the niche, and it gives you room to work the next time the light needs service. Too short means the light goes back in the box and you start over.
When you're stuck between the two, buy the 601002. Nobody has ever regretted having extra cord. Plenty of people have regretted the opposite.
Which IntelliBrite 5G should you buy?
Buy the 601001 if your measured run plus slack comes in safely under 50 feet. Buy the 601002 if you're anywhere near that limit, if you can't measure the run with confidence, or if your junction box is a long way from the pool.
One more note. Both of these are 120V lights. If your pool runs a 12V system with a transformer, these are not the models you want, so check your existing setup before ordering. And if your current IntelliBrite works fine but the colors quit changing or it went dim, you may not need a whole new light at all. A light engine kit can fix that for less.
