How to Upgrade a Pentair IntelliCenter i5P to i10PS (521873Z)
Pool owners call us about this one all the time. They bought an IntelliCenter i5P a few years back, and now they are adding a spa, a water feature, or a couple more lights, and the panel is out of room. The good news is you usually don't have to throw the whole system away. In most cases a Pentair 521873Z personality card turns that i5P into a full i10PS.
What's the difference between an IntelliCenter i5P and an i10PS?
The short version: the i5P is a pool-only system with five auxiliary circuits, and the i10PS is a pool and spa system with ten. The "P" means pool. The "PS" means pool and spa on shared equipment, so the system knows how to run valve actuators and switch between the two bodies of water.
That second part matters more than the extra relays. An i5P has no built-in idea of a spa mode. If you add a spa to a pool-only panel, you have no proper spillover control, no spa heat setpoint, and no clean one-button switch. Going to i10PS is what gives you that.
Can you convert an i5P to an i10PS without replacing the panel?
Yes, in most installs. IntelliCenter is built around a personality card that tells the system what kind of pool it is running. Swap the personality, and the panel becomes a different system. That is exactly what the Pentair 521873Z i10PS upgrade kit does.
What you keep: the enclosure, the transformer, the main power wiring, and the outdoor control panel. What changes: the personality card, and the number of relays and actuator connections you have available.
One thing to check first. Look at the label inside your panel door and confirm you actually have an IntelliCenter i5P, not an EasyTouch or an IntelliTouch. Those are different systems and need a different upgrade path. If you are not sure, send us a photo of the panel label and we'll tell you.
What else do you need besides the 521873Z card?
The card handles the brains. The rest depends on what you are actually adding. Most i5P to i10PS jobs need some of the following:
- Additional relays if the new circuits will switch line-voltage equipment like lights, a booster pump, or a blower
- Valve actuators for the intake and return valves, since spa mode has to move water between the pool and the spa
- A temperature sensor for the spa if you want independent spa heat control
- Extra low-voltage wire runs for anything new that lives away from the pad
None of that is exotic. It is just worth pricing out before you start, because the 521873Z card by itself does not add relays you don't already have installed.
How do you install the IntelliCenter i10PS personality card?
This is a live-power panel, so if you are not comfortable working inside one, hire a pool tech. If you are, the process looks like this:
- Kill power at the breaker and confirm it is dead with a meter, not by flipping a switch and hoping
- Open the panel and photograph every wire connection before you touch anything
- Remove the existing i5P personality card and its ribbon or plug connections
- Seat the 521873Z i10PS card, making sure every connector is fully home and not offset by a pin
- Land any new relay, actuator, and sensor wiring per the Pentair wiring diagram that ships with the kit
- Restore power and let the system boot, then run the setup wizard and tell it the system is now i10PS
- Name your circuits, assign the valve actuators, and test spa mode end to end before you call it done
Budget an afternoon. The card swap itself is quick. The programming and the valve testing take longer than people expect.
What if you only need eight circuits instead of ten?
Pentair sells the 521968Z i8PS board for that middle ground. It is worth a look if you are counting circuits and land under eight. In practice, though, most people end up wishing they had gone bigger. Lights, a heater, a cleaner booster pump, a blower, a water feature, and a spa add up faster than you'd think, and the price gap between the two boards is smaller than the cost of doing the job twice.
Is the i5P to i10PS upgrade worth it?
If you are adding a spa, it is not really optional. If you just need a few more circuits and have no spa plans, an i5PS daughter card or a simple relay add may be cheaper. Compare the 521873Z against a full new automation panel and the card wins on cost almost every time, since you are reusing the enclosure and the existing wiring.
The one case where we tell people to skip it is a panel that is already failing. If your IntelliCenter has water intrusion, corroded relay contacts, or a transformer that keeps dropping out, put the money toward a new system instead of a new personality card in a bad box.
