We get this question on the phone constantly. Two Hayward pumps, same TriStar family, bodies that look almost identical on the equipment pad, and a few hundred dollars between them. Which one actually belongs on your pool?

Here is the short answer first, then the reasoning behind it.

SP3215X20XE vs SP32950VSP: what is the quick answer?

Get the TriStar XE (SP3215X20XE) if your equipment pad only has 115V power, or if you have a normal residential pool with straightforward plumbing. Get the TriStar VS 950 (SP32950VSP) if you have 230V available and a bigger pool, a spa, a waterfall, or long pipe runs that need more push.

Both are real variable speed pumps. Both will drop your electric bill hard compared to an old single speed. The split comes down to available voltage and how much water you need to move.

What is the Hayward TriStar XE (SP3215X20XE)?

The SP3215X20XE is Hayward's ultra-high efficiency TriStar, rated 2.25 total horsepower and wired for either 115V or 230V. That dual voltage is the headline feature.

A lot of older pools, and almost every above ground setup, only have a 115V circuit at the pad. Most variable speed pumps on the market are 230V only, which means calling an electrician before you can even plug the thing in. The TriStar XE skips that. If you have 115V, it runs on 115V.

It is also a genuinely quiet pump at low speed. Run it overnight on a low filtration setting and most people cannot hear it from the patio.

What is the TriStar VS 950 (SP32950VSP)?

The SP32950VSP is the bigger, stronger pump of the two. It is rated 2.70 HP and runs on 230V only. If your pool asks a lot of the pump, this is the one built for it.

The extra horsepower matters more than people expect. Spa jets, in-floor cleaning systems, sheer descents, solar panels on a roof, and 2 inch plumbing that runs 60 feet to the pad all eat head pressure. A pump that is undersized for that work runs at high RPM constantly and stops being efficient.

Do I really not need 230V for the SP3215X20XE?

Correct, you do not. The TriStar XE is field configurable for 115V or 230V, so it works with the power you already have.

That said, if 230V is already sitting at your pad, use it. The same pump on 230V draws lower amperage and puts less strain on the wiring. The 115V option is there for people who would otherwise face an expensive electrical upgrade, not because it is the better way to run the pump.

Which pump moves more water?

The TriStar VS 950 does. More horsepower means more flow at the same restriction, which shows up on pools with heavy plumbing loads.

For a plain rectangular pool with a cartridge filter and a couple of returns, that headroom is wasted. The SP3215X20XE will move plenty of water and will do it at a lower RPM, which is where the savings actually come from. Bigger is not automatically better with variable speed pumps. Right sized is better.

Are the SP3215X20XE and SP32950VSP compatible with the same plumbing?

Both are TriStar family pumps, so they share the same general footprint and union style connections. In most swaps you will not be re-plumbing the pad from scratch.

  • Check your existing pump's suction and discharge height against the new pump before you cut anything
  • Confirm your breaker size and wire gauge match the pump you picked, especially if you are moving from single speed
  • If you run Hayward automation, verify the control connection on the model you order
  • Plan on new unions and fresh o-rings, they are cheap and save a callback

Is the TriStar VS 950 worth the extra money?

It is if your pool needs the flow. It is not if you are buying horsepower you will never use.

Think of it this way. The SP32950VSP costs more up front and gives you capacity in reserve. The SP3215X20XE costs less, solves the 115V problem, and is the right call for the majority of average sized residential pools. Neither is a bad pump. Buying the wrong size for your pool is the actual mistake.

Answer two questions. What voltage is at your pad, and does your pool have a spa, a water feature, or a long run of pipe? If the answer is 115V, go TriStar XE. If it is 230V plus extra load, go TriStar VS 950. If it is 230V with a simple pool, either works and the SP3215X20XE saves you money.
