Hayward SP0714T vs. SPX0715X32: Do You Need a 1.5-Inch or 2-Inch Multiport Valve?
Short answer: match the valve to your plumbing. If your pool runs 1.5 inch pipe, the Hayward SP0714T is the one you want. If your system is plumbed with 2 inch pipe, go with the SPX0715X32. Putting the wrong size on your filter creates flow problems you will fight forever.
We get this question at the counter all the time. Someone's old multiport valve cracked or started leaking, they look up a replacement, and now they're staring at two Hayward part numbers that look almost identical. Here is how to tell them apart and pick the right one the first time.
What does a multiport valve actually do?
A multiport valve is the control center on top of your sand filter. It lets you switch the water path between filter, backwash, rinse, waste, recirculate, and closed with one handle.
When it wears out, you'll usually notice water leaking down the waste line, a handle that's hard to turn, or pressure that never settles where it should. Sometimes a new spider gasket fixes it. But if the valve body itself is cracked or warped, replacing the whole valve is the smarter move.
What's the difference between the SP0714T and the SPX0715X32?
The main difference is port size. The Hayward SP0714T is a 1.5 inch Vari-Flo top mount valve, and the SPX0715X32 is a 2 inch multiport valve. Bigger ports let more water through with less resistance.
Price is the other gap. The SP0714T runs $189.99 and the SPX0715X32 runs $349.99 in our store. That difference tempts some people to size down. Don't. The right size is the one that matches your plumbing and your pump, not the cheaper one.
How do I know which size I need?
Check three things before you order. This takes five minutes and saves you a return shipment.
- Measure your pipe. PVC that measures about 1.9 inches across the outside is 1.5 inch pipe. About 2.375 inches outside means 2 inch pipe.
- Look at your old valve. The part number is usually molded into the body or printed on the lid. If it starts with SP0714, you have the 1.5 inch valve. Replacing like for like is the safest bet.
- Consider your pump. Higher horsepower pumps and larger pools move a lot of water. A 2 inch valve like the SPX0715X32 handles that flow with less pressure loss, which your pump and your electric bill will appreciate.
Can you put a 2 inch valve on 1.5 inch plumbing?
You can with reducer fittings, but it rarely makes sense. You pay more for the valve and the smaller pipe still limits your flow, so you don't get the benefit of the bigger ports.
Going the other direction is worse. Choking 2 inch plumbing down to a 1.5 inch valve raises resistance in the system. That can starve a big pump, push filter pressure up, and shorten the life of your equipment. If your system was built with 2 inch pipe, stick with the 2 inch SPX0715X32.
One more thing to check before you swap the valve
Make sure the valve you buy matches your filter's mounting style. The SP0714T is a top mount valve, meaning it bolts onto the top of the sand filter tank with a flange. If your current valve hangs off the side of the tank with two pipes running to it, you have a side mount setup and need to confirm fitment before ordering.
While the system is apart, it's a good time to inspect your filter sand too. If it's been in there seven years or more, changing it now saves you from opening things up twice.
