Hayward Salt & Swim 3C Not Making Chlorine? How to Tell If the W3SAS-CELL Is Worn Out
A salt pool is supposed to be the low effort one. Then the water goes dull, you test it, and free chlorine is sitting near zero even though the box on the wall says everything is fine.
On a Hayward Salt & Swim 3C, the cell is the part that actually makes the chlorine, and it wears out. That is not a defect. It is just how the plates work. Below is how to figure out whether your W3SAS-CELL is done, and what to rule out first so you do not buy a cell you did not need.
Why is my Hayward Salt & Swim not making chlorine?
Nine times out of ten it is one of four things: salt is too low, the water is too cold, the cell plates are coated in scale, or the W3SAS-CELL has reached the end of its useful life.
Start with salt. Do not trust the reading on the display by itself. Take a water sample in or use a fresh test strip. A system that reads low salt will cut output way back to protect the cell, and a system that reads high salt sometimes shuts off entirely.
Then check water temperature. Salt cells slow down noticeably once the pool drops into the low 60s, and most systems stop generating once the water gets down near 50 degrees. If it is early spring and the pool is cold, the system is not broken.
Last, check flow. A dirty filter, a clogged pump basket, or a pump speed set too low can all leave the system without enough flow to fire the cell. Clean the filter and run the pump at a normal speed before you blame the cell.
How long does a W3SAS-CELL actually last?
Figure on roughly three to five years on a typical residential pool. Cells are rated in hours of chlorine production, not in calendar years, so a pool that runs long hours in a hot climate burns through one much faster than a pool with a short season.
A few habits shorten cell life fast:
- Running output at 100 percent all season instead of dialing it in
- Letting pH climb and stay high, which builds scale on the plates
- High calcium hardness in the fill water
- Acid washing the cell too often or with acid that is too strong
Keep pH in range, keep stabilizer where it should be, and set output to whatever actually holds your chlorine. Your W3SAS-CELL will last longer for it.
How do I know it is the cell and not the control box?
Look at where the failure shows up. If the control box powers on, lights up, and reports normal salt and flow but the pool still will not hold chlorine, the cell is the likely suspect. If the display is dead, garbled, or throwing power related warnings, the problem is upstream of the cell.
A simple check: run the system, then look through the clear cell housing while it is generating. You should see fine bubbles coming off the plates. Little or no bubbling with good salt, good flow, and warm water points straight at a worn out cell.
Also pull the cell and look at the plates. New plates are dark and evenly coated. A cell near the end of its life often has plates that look patchy, light, or flaked in spots. Once that coating is gone, no amount of cleaning brings it back.
How to clean the cell before you replace it
Scale is the most common thing that mimics a dead cell, and it is free to rule out. Shut the pump off at the breaker first.
- Unscrew the unions and pull the cell out of the plumbing
- Look down inside at the plates for white, crusty buildup
- Rinse hard with a hose first. Sometimes that is all it takes
- If buildup stays, soak in a mix of four parts water to one part muriatic acid, acid added to the water, never the other way around
- Let it fizz for a few minutes, no longer. Rinse well and reinstall
If the pool makes chlorine again after that, you saved yourself a cell. If nothing changes, you have your answer.
Is the W3SAS-CELL compatible with my system?
The W3SAS-CELL is the replacement cell for the Hayward Salt & Swim 3C system and is rated for pools up to 30,000 gallons. It is the direct swap for that system, and it is not interchangeable with a TurboCell from an AquaRite, or with a Pentair IntelliChlor cell. The housings and connectors are different.
If you are not sure which system you have, read the label on the control box on the equipment pad. Salt & Swim is printed right on it. That is the one that takes this cell.
Replace the cell or replace the whole system?
If the control box works and only the cell is worn, replace the cell. That is the normal maintenance item and it costs a fraction of a full system.
Replacing the whole thing makes more sense in two cases: the control box has also failed, or the system was undersized for your pool from day one and you are constantly running it flat out. In that second case a bigger system solves a problem a new cell will not.
